Member of Anash Prevents Serious Assaultin a CH Building

CROWN HEIGHTS, Brooklyn [CHI] — Last week, a Jewish Crown Heights resident stepped in and prevented the serious assault of a 17 year old Black girl, and contributed to the apprehension and arrest of the attacker.

The incident took place on Thursday, May 1st where the attacker, a Black male, grabbed the teen at the subway station on Nostrand Avenue and Sterling Street at knife point, and dragged her all the way to an apartment building, 441 Brooklyn Avenue which is on the corner of Empire Boulevard, and there proceeded to take the victim into the elevator to the sixth floor.

Screaming for help, a single resident bothered to come out of his apartment at 1:30 in the morning, this was Reb Chaim Javitz who was armed with a cordless telephone and barefoot, he called out to the attacker who immediately began fleeing, Javitz chased him to the fifth floor and then abandoned the pursuit.

He returned to the victim and called 911, where many officers responded to the scene and took witness statements and filed a complaint. The entire attack was captured by a video surveillance system, a copy of which was given to detectives as evidence.

Together with the video and Mr. Javitz’s detailed description police had succeeded in making an arrest this past Monday, May 5th, and didn’t even require a lineup since the video quality was very good and enough to make a positive identification.

A background check of the suspect revealed that he had one prior arrest for possession of marijuana.

The detective that was assigned to the case, Det. Moel Torres of the NYPD’s Special Victims Unit (SVU), later spoke to Mr. Javitz and thanked him for his intervention the assault, he told him “you literally saved this girl” being the only resident to step out of their apartment, in a building with both Jewish and non-Jewish residents reside.

441 Empire Boulevard, a building quite familiar to crime related issues, including a mugging in an elevator over a year ago, as well as stones being thrown from the roof of that building at passing cars. Even more troublesome is the fact that perps know the building doors to always be open and it provides them a ‘safe haven’ while fleeing from police, as has happened in a incident where a store was robbed at gunpoint and the perp ran into the building and his trail was lost, possibly because of the second exit the building which leads to Balfour Place.

    what about all the other jewish neighbours who did nothing. Only 1 person out of a whole building bothered to find out what was going on.

    I would hate to live there.

    I live in the building across the street from that one, and the front door is always unlocked, too. The building is home to a drug dealer, it seems…Cameras are a good idea, but the management has to want it.
