Over Yom Tov, Two Incidents in Rochester Park

CROWN HEIGHTS, Brooklyn [CHI] — Two incidents took place in the Lincoln Terrace Park, also known as the Rochester Park, upset the overall calm of the first days of Pesach in Crown Heights.

Sunday afternoon, the first day of Pesach, two boys walked into the park with a basketball, and as they were making their way across the park to the basketball courts they were approached by a group of 4 black young teens, who demanded they empty their pockets and hand over the ball.

After a short scuffle, in which the assailants tried to grab the ball from the boys, they fled the park running to a nearby home of Shomrim member seeking his help. Together they went back into the park in attempt to locate the perpetrators but were not successful, and no police report has been filed.

Then on Monday, the second day of Pesach, a group of three young Jewish boys who were playing in the park were approached by a group of seven black teens, their ages ranging from 15 to 17, demanded their baseball mitts and money, once again the boys refused only to be attacked and beaten by the group.

After fleeing their assailants they approached a Shomrim member who was nearby, and together went back into the park and spotted a police car, which they found was out of service but the officers were still willing to take a police report regarding the incident, only to classify it as harassment and not an assault and attempted mugging since there were no ‘visible marks’ and they didn’t actually take anything.

While filling out the report one of the victims spotted the perp nearby and mentioned it to the police officers, but they responded that they didn’t commit an arrestable offence.

Rochester Park is under the jurisdiction of the 77th Precinct.

In case of an emergency never hesitate to call 911 and Shomrim at (718) 774-3333 24/7

The NYPD is treading on pretty thin ice here. Chanina will take this up with the Mayor when they meet for a photo op.

I guess cops only do anything if one of their own or one of their kids are attacked. We need help, because the local police are NOT doing their jobs.

  • the boy that was beaten

I was the boy that was beaton on monday of yom tov. I want to thank the shomrim for leaving their homes and quickly responding and helping out at the mugging.

now that the weather is getting warmer more children will play in the park. perhaps a system of volunteers should be set up to patrol parks and playgrounds for the hours when children play.

you’re aren’t allowed to play ball on yom tov (see alter rebbe’s sh”a 308, and yerushalmi taanis)

The law leaves citizens no choice but to defend themselves.
Sounds like Jews and Arabs in Israel.
No need to visit the Bronx Zoo, visit America.
Not certain what the police stated is really the law.

    To Moshe:

If you are quoting the Alter Rebbe — please quote in full and accurately. The alter Rebbe brings a second opinion that it is mutar on Shabbos in reshus hayachid and in the footnotes of the new edition it is mutar on Yom Tov even in Reshus Harabbim

why do the little boys play with the nuts outside 770 on yom tov? is this a russian minhag?

  • old fashioned mother

let’s leave the shulchan aruch aside for a minute, any parent that does not instill in their child a proper kovod for yom tov and allows them to playo baseball on yom tov (at these ages) should not have any complaints or dilemas later when their boys turn away from a yiddishe chasidishe lifestyle.

ירושלמי דף כ“ד ע”ב regarding the city of “טור שמעון ולמה חרב יש אומר מפני הזנות וי”א שהיו משחקין בכדור“.
it’s quite evident from here and from the sh”a quoted before that it’s not proper.
but then again we see the tznius matzav in CH reflects the firsn reason in the yerushalmi

My wife was jogging in the park in the Winter while I was sitting on a bench and learning.
All of a sudden a rock lands near me. I look up and see two Hispanic teenagers laughing and throwing rocks. They proceed to walk slowly north towards Eastern Parkway.
I pick up one of the rocks and attempt to throw it back but I was afraid to hit a car. They begin to laugh.
I take my broken cell phone (Great to have one, useful or not!) I hold it up and yell that I’m calling the police. I also yelled that I’m taking their pictures (my inexpensive phone had no camera).
The two bums start running like crazy north.
Since the laws are weak in America the average citizen has to defend himself. A cell phone, functional or not, is great to have!
(Lucky for the 2 pigs because I have an excellent right arm.)

why are Crown heights boys going to the park on Yom Tov with Mits and basket balls on yom tov?

and for those who want to get nitty gritty with the alter Rebbe’s Shulchan Aruch we as Lubavitchers are Chasidim first and formost and the chasidim generally are more Machmir on themselves……

  • a chossid darf shteyn hecher

In the medrash it is brought down that beitar was destroyed because they played ball on shabbos.

  • Rosey

Please do not shy away from this park.
I took my kids every Shabbos and Yom Tov for years and never had a problem.
Maybe if more kids came with parents, things would be just fine.

Hoping we have a good summer for those of us that can not leave.

the point is not if they were allowed to go play baseball or not.
you put the fault on the boys and on the parents, this is not right!!!!!!! this shvartze attack our boys you put our boys to court, what’s the heck????????
it was not on shabbos but on yom tov.
if there will be gathering for boys on yom tov to say tehilim or other the boys wouldn’t be bored and go to the park. so Mr Moshe you sound like one who is learning a lot, you should take upon yourself to do something for the boys .
rochester park is not safe this is not the first time it’s happening, one adult should be with the kids when they go there for sure.

As the shomrim member who responded out of my own house i am appalled at all of you. a 13 yr old was hit by a shvartze and all you can do is argue whether he was playing according to shulchon aruch. GEVALD.

The boys went to the park to play catch on yom tov not shobbos. which according to some opinions is ok. its not up to you to decide if they where doing something wrong halachikly who are you to judge…

The only thing that can be said is that even a 13 yr old shouldve been there with someone older and bigger since the kid wasnt so strong himself. but i have to say they where definitely brave standing up to the shvartzes the way they did…

I’ve lived near this park my whole life and I’ve seen the good and the bad yrs. it can be a nice place to take your kids just make sure an adult if there. and if chas vechalila there is something that goes wrong just call the hotline for shomrim or come down to my house a half a block away and we will deal with the matter in the correct way.

What are you talking about? How will boys turn away from yiddishkeit by playing ball in the park on YOM TOV?! Where there are opinions who allow such things, and according to me that moshe guy is off his rocker.
