Home Robbed Erev Shabbos

CROWN HEIGHTS, Brooklyn [CHI] — Erev Shabbos, on Brooklyn between Montgomery St and Empire Blvd, a resident came home to find his apartment broken into and ransacked. A neighbor called Shomrim, who made sure the apartment was secure, then advised the resident to call police and file a report, which he resisted due to the fact that Shabbos was in less than 30 minutes.

More pictures in the Extended Article.

From a quick scan of the apartment it appeared that the burglar, or burglars, went through the cabinets and closets in search of valuables but it wasn’t immediately apparent what they have taken. The point of entry to the building, a multiple dwelling house, wasn’t clear. The hatch allowing entry from the roof seemed to be out of place, while the owner was not sure if he had properly locked the front door.

Once inside the house, the perpetrator broke through the doorframe to gain entry to the apartment.

When Shabbos ended the victim called 911 and asked to file a report, officers from the 71st Precinct responded and followed procedure, calling ECT (the Evidence Collection Team).

Following the incident the victim felt that the ECT team had not treated him properly by complaining that he has ‘contaminated’ the possible evidence by not calling police right away, while the local precinct officers were courteous, professional and sensitive to the robbery. A complaint has been filed with the precinct and other appropriate departments.

  • they were right

the ect had what to complain about. a person has a choice if he wants to wait before calling the police, but then there’s no evidence for the police to work with to catch the criminals.

It is vital to remember the importance of proper kosher mezuzus and the correct location on the door post, this is just a sad reminder for those who dont realize the importance of the mitzvah of mezuzah

  • HOPE YOU ARE SMART!

yea, hope you didnt stay at your house for shabbos bc for sure you would have wiped off evidence. i hope you were smart enough to not go in AT ALL and wait for the police!!!

  • not a cop fan but...

The police can’t get please som people, can they??? We complain if they DON’T show up or take a report, then when they do, we screw up the evidence!

For once, I think they’re right!

And the houseowner can’t remember if he locked the fromt door?? Heaven help us.

Yankel, You obviously don’t know Hilchot Mezuzot, since this fellow’s Mezuzah is place on the CORRECT (right) side of the entrance.

Even according to our Minhag of Heker Tzir, it does not bind for the Front door which you ALWAYS go by the right regardless of which direction the door opens into.

  • true but have rachmonus

You guys are all right, but don’t judge him until CH”V in his place. Being robbed is a violating and unnerving experience! We don’t always make the right choices at a time like this. My best wishes and sympathy to the VICTIMS and Hashem should protect us all
