Police Comish Hosts Forum with the Community
BROOKLYN, NY [CHI] — The commissioner of the NYPD introduced a new program called the ‘Community Partnership Program’ in a gathering in the SUNY Downstate Medical Center in Crown Heights Thursday, December 13th.

Following him, was Chief Douglas Zeigle of the Community Affairs Bureau, who spoke about different programs the police run, such as the Police Explorers Program and the NYPD Summer Camp. Mr. Zeigle went on to say how these programs help encourage the youth not to fear the police and to pursue a career in law enforcement and stay away from crime.
One issue, the core of this new program, is police trust. Research has shown that Black residents have little, to no trust in the police and therefore do not want to share information with the police.
Inspector Scott Loos of the Police Academy whose job is to train new officers in developing and maintaining community trust, showed a couple a video clips from training sessions at the Police Academy, where you see community leaders addressing the cadets, explaining how to deal with their communities.
A Short video was then shown of the NYPD’s undercover unit, where two of its former detectives spoke about their job and their mission. The commissioner then introduced Detective First Grade Steven Dailey, a former undercover narcotics detective, who spoke to the crowd and described what it is he does. A short question and answer session followed where Mr. Dailey briefly explained some of the operations they do such as buy and bust drug operations and more.
The final part of the evening was when Mr. Kelly took questions from the crowd, which included concerns from residents. One of them was from a block association president from the 77th Precinct where he voiced his complaint that there are no longer the ‘foot post’ police officer, and how that posses a problem for law abiding residents to report crime. He explained how when there is a foot post they hear about crime, and then when a reports a crime it isn’t immediately assumed that it was a resident who reported, rather it may have been a foot post.
Other concerns, included violent crime, to which the commissioner responded that the city is up for a record of fewer then 500 murders, the lowest it’s been since the inception of the NYPD some 200 years ago, and how crime in general is down throughout the city. He added that the police are still working on lowering those numbers further by deploying officers in the areas where it’s needed.
Mr. Kelly also expressed his desire to put a police officer on every street corner and completely stop crime, “but”, he said, that isn’t possible, and he has to work with the resources he has.
Residents then got to speak to the commissioner individually and take pictures together.
One of the Jewish residents that attended expressed his disappointment with how little the turnout was between the Jewish residents of Crown Heights.
BS stats
Of course there was little turnout.
We were all only informed about this event about 3-4 hours prior to it. How then could we plan accordingly???
..So again they babble their statistics. This only furthers our point – That the Police don’t fill out reports, in order to “lower crime”.
Common commissioner, stop the BS.
fed up

lowering numbers by not reporting crimes! when a citizen tries to report a crime, he gets talked out of it, that’s how they are lowering the stats
It was also very unfair to notify people of this meeting the afternoon of the event – I think we could have had a better turnout if there was some notice
CHer
How do you expect notice when the people who claim to represent the community are led by Chanina?
Besides, he wouldn’t want us show up, we’d ruin his photo op for COL!!!
We get close to zippo from officials so Chanina can be chummy with politicians and get his picture with them, ever wonder why other communities don’t, because they get programs not just pictures!!!

Everybody should know about, and attend, the 71st Precinct Community Council meeting this coming Thursday night at 7:30 PM at the Intermediate School (Empire Boulevard at NY Avenue). There needs to be a greater turnout by the community at this meeting.
An Eye That Sees

We are among the Yidden who live in a predominantly non-Jewish area of our community (a little past the Shuk). Unlike the complaints I’m reading here, we received TWO yellow flyers in our mailbox about the event — one about a week before, and another several days later.
We did not attend, but we certainly were well informed about the event, well in advance.
Crown Heights powers-that-be (the Jewish ones, that is):
DO YOU CARE ENOUGH TO INFORM YOUR CONSTITUENCIES???????

To CHer:
someone other than Chanina knew of this event, and could have publicized it for free on any of these websites
Dont blame everything on incompetence and bureacracy!

Look at the subjects covered at the meeting. This was aimed at the black community who are stopped & harassed often, particularly their kids. No one wanted us there & resultantly we weren’t informed. In any case it was only pr for the cops.
Like anyone really needs an undercover cop to explain what he does (and give a sanitized version of the way such ops are supposed to take place.) And who needs a photo with Ray Kelly anyway?!
We need the police & leadership at all levels, to be responsive to the small petty crimes ( which aren’t petty when you are the one being spit at or punched in the arm), which lead to larger ones because the perpetrators & their friends know they can get away with it. And when larger crimes are committed, such as the Montgomery St yungerman coming home from work this summer having teeth knocked out in an assault by two " kids" on bikes that he was trying to pass; not too much is done & it just escalates to ever more violent incidents. And these are not labelled as bias crimes, which they often are.
That meeting was useless in addressing these issues. If you really want to show how important this is and hold police feet to the fire, come to
the 71st Precinct Council Meeting this
Thursday,7:30 PM ,PS 61, corner Empire Blvd & New York Ave.- across from the police station.
The power of our numbers is the only way we will effect any change.

I hope everyone that took the time to comment that they had no notice of last weeks meeting finds the time to attend the Thursday night meeting at the 71st precinct.
