Shul Representatives of Crown Heights Clarify Eligibility Disqualifications for Upcoming CHJCC Board of Directors Election

Preparations have been underway for the first election of Directors of the Vaad Hakohol and Crown Heights Jewish Community Council in 14 years. The Shul Representatives, who play a crucial role in this process, recently held an independent meeting to address important matters related to the upcoming election.

Key Decisions Made by Shul Representatives:

  1. Verification of Representatives: In their last meeting on Rosh Chodesh Nissan (April 8th), the Shul Representatives unanimously decided to require every representative to bring an official letter from their shul to prove their authenticity. This step aims to ensure that only legitimate representatives participate in the election process.
  2. Eligibility Clarification: The Shul Representatives voted with an overwhelming majority to clarify the eligibility criteria for running in the election. While there had been concerns about disqualification due to participation in community organizations, the decision clarified that the disqualification is very specific and, in reality, allows almost all eligible residents of the Crown Heights community to run for the CHJCC Board of Directors—Vaad Hakohol.

The motion to change the language on the Call for Candidates Form to the following:

Individual in a management position at a 501c3 (Non-for-Profit) that receives discretionary funding or general funding for social services, that is in direct conflict with the services being provided and/or offered by the CHJCC would be ineligible to run as a candidate for the Board of Director of CHJCC.

Individual responsible for securing funding for their organization/Not-for-Profit as a fiscal officer of said organization would be ineligible to run as a candidate for the Board of Director of CHJCC.

Individual convicted of felony, misdemeanor, and revocation of a business license by New York State would be ineligible to run as a candidate for the Board of Director of CHJCC.

  1. Encouragement for Participation: The Shul Representatives encourage able and capable residents of Crown Heights to consider running for the CHJCC Board of Directors—Vaad Hakohol. The upcoming election, scheduled for Sunday, 25 Iyar 5784 (June 2nd), provides an opportunity for community members to actively contribute to the leadership and decision-making processes.
  2. Adherence to Bylaws: To ensure transparency and fairness, the Shul Representatives decided to proceed according to the rules set forth in the bylaws. As part of this process, all members of the Election Committee and Nominations Committee are required to submit proper documentation confirming their status as shul representatives.

Election Schedule:

  • Submission of Nominations: 24 Nisan (Thursday, May 2)
  • Final Candidate List Published: 30 Nisan (Wednesday, May 8)
  • Candidates Forum: 12 Iyar (Monday, May 20)
  • Election Day: 25 Iyar (Sunday, June 2)
