CROWN HEIGHTS, Brooklyn [CHI] — A Crown Heights family is nothing but thankful to Det. Joseph LaMassa of the 71st Precincts Detective Squad. This past summer R. Y. G. and his wife were devastated to find that their new Treo cell phone had been pick pocketed while walking on Eastern Parkway.

On the phone was a number of video clips of the G’s newborn child, who’s sentimental value could not be replaced unlike the phone itself. The couple made their way of the 71st Precinct where they filed a police report and met with a detective who interviewed them regarding the incident.

71st Pct. Detective Retrieves Stolen Phone

Following the interview the detective took the case to heart and after letting the couple know not to get their hopes up, since such thefts almost always do not result in the recovery of the stolen property, but he will do his best to try and recover the phone.

A few hours after leaving the Precinct the family received a call from Det. LaMassa informing them that they can come back and retrieve the phone!

In a show of appreciation and gratitude R. Y. G. sent a letter to the office of the NYPD’s commissioner thanking him and recommending a commendation for Det. LaMassa, that request has been recently granted.

CrownHeights.info would also like to commend Det. Joseph LaMassa for giving himself over to this case, which is just one more merit to his credit following a long and extensive career here in the 71st Precinct in which he continues his invaluable contribution to our community. Thank You.

71st has a lot of stuff to shape up.

yet, this should not get in the way of complimenting individuals that have accomplished what most others don’t.

I would like to commend the G’s for their actions – giving credit where it’s due.

While I am very happy this family enjoyed a successful outcome, most of us who are victims of crime never get satisfaction.

What about all those people over the past couple of years who have been severely beaten during robberies, including children?? My son was such a victim…TWICE!

And once again, let’s not forget Ephraim Klein HY"D. His family don’t have the satisfaction of seeing his killer behind bars.

Please understand that I am not minimizing the importance of this family’s success; being robbed is invasive & personal. But I can’t see how a detective’s good fortune in finding a cell phone (my guess by catching the thief for some other crime)deserves such high accolades.

  • You put the Sin in cynical

Dear cynical: I agree with you, he shouldn’t get such high accolades. Why don’t you go and take it from him?

People like you make me glad im not a police officer.

  • re the CYNIC

if every citizen did two simple steps when on the receiving end of a crime, a lot of difference can be accomplished!

(both of these steps were done by this couple)

    1) No matter how big or small the incident
always always REPORT IT!! how many crimes do these criminals get away with b/c people are to busy to be bothered to report! the more REPORTS the easier to connect the dots!

    2) Hakoras HaTov.(Positive Reinforcement) u get a lot more with appreciating the good work, than bitterly dwelling on the Disappointments, Kol HaKavod to this couple’s Decency to take the time and give thanx!

If only more of us followed their example, maybe we’d have a lot more cooporation, and less to complain about,

"Whatever u want should grow, make that ur main focuss of attention” (the Positive or the Negitive!)

I wish I could predict lottery numbers the way I predicted the venemous, irrational responses to what was, I believe, a very reasonable opinion.

Yes, you good people out there, I have an opinion. It may be different from yours, but it is my opinion, and therefore no less deserving than yours to be expressed.

Your attitudes serve to reinforce what is clearly a problem here in Crown Heights and probably in other neighborhoods: the vilification of freedom of speech IF IT DOES NOT AGREE WITH YOUR VIEWS.

So sad. But perhaps, "sin in Cynical" you SHOULD become a police officer. Then you can beat to a pulp with your nightstick anyone whose views do not coincide with yours. This way you will have immeasurable opportunities to impose YOUR views on society. What a comforting, democratic thought.

  • Crown Heightser

Very nice story…. aval ha’ikar chaser min hasefer: How did the detective find it? And how so fast?

  • re CYNICAL

Dear self proclaimed cynic, I fail to see any one suggesting to suppress you views,
It is ironic but you sound very much like the description you outlined, someone who can’t tolerate others freedom to express a differing view!

then you employ labels like "vilifying…" I see mostly eloquent differing opinions, to the credit of crownheights.info he’ll publish even impassioned responses like yours, where you seem to live up to every lable you mentioned above (venomous, irrational…) it seems to me that yours best qualifies for the above descriptions!

I do non the less appreciate your valid point, (save the delivery!) that there is significant let down in the way many in the 71st seem put a blind eye to an escalating trend, which will altimetly reflect poorly on the prct. If not immediately/seriously reversed!

As for the couple, I echo, the comments that more will be accomplished by their (of positive reinforcement) approach, than by any mud-slinging, bitter-fingerprinting, …enough said!

  • Sad but not Cynical

i agree with the cynic’s point, re the 71st asleep at the wheel! (by in-large)

but get a grip with your "Passion" your "style" may subtrct from your message!!

  • Cynical & bored

Could you very angry and scathing posters PLEASE re-read my previous posts? Then re-read your responses and see if you’re missing the point.

Still, despite the nastiness that, quite frankly, is disgusting but not altogether suprising, I’m glad Webby believes in free speech; thank you for allowing me to "speak." But I must address my fellow posters: insulting people whose views are not yours is at best inappropriate and at worst, dangerous. Good job this is anonymous…I’d hate to think we are friends & these are your secret personas!!

I am sure some posters will continue in the same vein; however, I will not respond again. The issue is redundant and I don’t feel like beating a dead horse further.

Have a productive and enjoyable day!!!
