770: “By Police Request, Selling Prohibited Around 770”

CROWN HEIGHTS, Brooklyn [CHI] – One of the staples of Tishrai is the seemingly impossible task of navigating the sidewalks around 770, thanks to the marketplace it becomes. The police have put an end to it as of yesterday, citing security concerns.

Residents hailed the decision, saying that the whole environment was extremely disrespectful, with people selling the four minim along with a variety of other items ranging from electronics to candy, creating pedestrian traffic along with safety hazards.

Police told booth keepers to pack their wares up and not to sell on the 770 sidewalks anymore, and signs were posted in Hebrew and in English stating the new rules.

We can expect a lot more cleanup at 770 in the near future. The gabboim have been terrible about security. Open doors, loose luggage, no coordination. No security whatsoever. Insane.

    Good!!

Let them take their disgusting, dirty shuk somewhere else.

and don’t give me "free enterprise" or "everyone has to make a living.’" This is not the Eastern European shtetl either, although thse guys are 21st century peddlars.

This is OUR NEIGHBORHOOD, not a market.

  • what a pity

you are taking away the atmosphere of Tishrei 770, we live here years and thier has not been incidences, why all of a sudden now.
When labor day comes they can do whatever they please…
    What a shame.

  • left foot

there goes the festive atmosphere of Tishrei. Woohoo. the police put up a sign. so what? does that mean they’re right?

  • Finally!

That was a very smart decision. Not only does it create a safety hazard, but it also creates havoc right in front of 770. Yasher Koach!

  • Help the jewish homeless

Who is that homeless guy! Why doesnt anyone help him shave his head and put on new clothing!

  • Fed Up

Nebuch no more Moshiach flags, shirts, pins and hats.
What will every One of out middle eastern brothers wear?

It reminds me of a Bazzar in Afganhistan.

Im happy about this. 770 should not be a flea market. It only hurts the hard working TAX PAYING stores of CH.

  • chaim

We all remember on Sunday’s when the Rebbe used to distribute dollars inside 770 – outside in frontof 770 became then a chicken market!

  • elephantbrain

It’s a major victory for the sourpusses!

As far as security is concerned, NOBODY – NOBODY, not Rabbi Krinsky, not the gabboyim, with the exception of Shomrim, NOBODY ever did anything about security in 770.

Getting rid of the hapless vendors is no effort toward security, just another heavy-handed law-enforcement effort to show who’s boss – over the weak.

Hope you have the courage to post this,

  • ZED

    To "what a pity":

The LAbod Day vendors all have permits for their booths. As do all hot dog stands, etc. in the city.

  • no supporter of Krinsky

I am no supporter of Krinsky, and nobody can prove that he is behind this, BUT
    the shuk must go!!!
It is a disgusting bazaar, and has no place in front of our shul – Bais Chayenu – The Rebbe’s (MHM) shul!
Don’t give me "they need the money" business – I can’t afford to go to Israel every year, and I dont. Of course, this is different – they are coming to the Rebbe, but not at our expense, at the expense of our schuna’s storekeepers, and going door to door shlepping money to cover their expenses.
They should earn the money, but in a mentshliche way, not dirtying our streets, and making a mockery of 770

Goyim sell stuff all the time on the street of Utica and Eastern Parkway but the police don’t stop them. Is this harrassment of Jews? Maybe they should sell across the street in the walkway by the subway.

  • C-MON

C’mon… those vendors are part of 770 for the past fifty years..
Does anyone remember a time when there were no vendors?
Rabbi Chadokov wanted to chase away the shnorerees that stood outside 770 after dollars.
(THEY WERE MUCH MORE AGGRESSIVE THAN THE VENDORS)
and the Rebbe asked him if he would take Achrayos for them.
Of course Rabbi Chadokov did not send them away…

  • Zalman

    Anon,
the goyim at Utica are not selling in front of a national terrorist threat site! The NYPD is rightfully concerned that the security provided by the gabboim is less than 0% and that the fewer people outside 770, the safer it will be for all of us.

It’s not secret that the top terrorist threat on national and NYPD lists is 770. We should be thanking the cops.

  • abe

i think they shud camp out in front of 1414 or mendy h. house.

for the isreali mentality it is normal to have a chazerish look outside of such a holy place cuz thats isrealis. go to meiron on lag baomer and ull see what goes on, by isrealis the uglier it is the better they like it.

  • Brotherly Love

This is for Abe,Chaim, and EP res:
You guys should be ashamed of yourselves. Where is "Ahavas Yisroel"?
The Rebbe would definately be disappointed in your comments.
    Especially on these holy days.

Comments like these can be expected by jealous goyim not jews.

  • Baal Teshuva

So much for our major Ahavas Yisroel in the "so called" Days of Teshuva!!! I must say that now I am starting to understand why Moshiach still hasn’t arrived!!!

  • CROWNHEIGHTSER & LOVING IT

ATTENTION EP: YOU ARE RIGHT ABOUT WHAT YOU SAY, BUT WHY ALL THE VENOM???
AND FOR ALL THOSE WHO FEEL THAT THIS IS WHAT MAKES THE TISHEREI SPIRIT, I FEEL SORRY FOR YOU. THIS IS DEGRADING AND DEFACING AND DEBASING 770 WHICH IS SUPPOSED TO BE A MOKOM KODOSH NOT A MARKET PLACE. AND TO USE LABOR DAY AS A COMPARISON, WHAT AN INSULT TO PUT US ON THAT LEVEL. THIS IS NOT WHAT TISHREI IS ALL ABOUT. IT WAS NEVER LIKE THIS UNTIL THE LAST FEW YEARS. LAST BUT NOT LEAST, AS MUCH AS I FEEL THE ISREALI’S BRING A CERTAIN RUACH TO TISHREI THEY ALSO OVERPOWER THE PLACE WITH NO REGARD FOR ANYONE ELSE AND MAKE IT VERY UNAPPEALING FOR ANYONE ELSE TO WANT TO COME TO 770. THAT APPLIES TO THE K’VUTZA BOYS AS WELL, THE ONES THAT LEARN HERE ALL YEAR ROUND. THEY EXCLUDE ANYONE WHO IS NOT "ONE OF THEM". AND THAT IS WRONG AND ABSOLUTELY NOT THE REBBE’S ROTZON OR INTENTION.

  • Mendy

    B"H

It also help the huge tznius problem which has gotten out of control in these past few years.

  • sara

This forum is an open discussion but why is there names being mentioned and in a not good context? We are in between rosh hashana and yom kippur we are being judged…judge others like you yourself would want to be judged.

  • I swung my chicken@ncfje

    They’re still there!! Now what??

BTW, FYI…I know who got the police to do something about this marketplace…stand up, Yossi F!!

Great job, at least you tried.

  • anonymous

Zalman wrote "It’s not secret that the top terrorist threat on national and NYPD lists is 770". If that’s so, then 770 should get funding from the government for security against terrorism (but then the question would be who would be in control of the $$).

  • Shia

    Zalman:

Is 770 the TOP terrorist threat on national and NYPD lists is 770?

There was a credible threat many years ago, but have not heard something lately.

  • The Guy With the Dog

Tishrei is really the only time of year I can say I love Crown Heights. This flea market is part of that Tishrei atmosphere. I’m a little saddened to it go.

  • no longer in CH

how is taking away some harmless people selling their things creating "safety"…. PLEASE!!!! people really have nothing better to do other than pick on their own. if you want safety in CH why don’t people start worrying about the REAL crime.

  • Normal Comment

MORANS- Now they will just move the shuk inside 770…At least before we could daven in peace…..

  • Out of Towner

Can someone get em one of those signs in Hebrew, they will be a collectors item someday..

  • to curious...

Ha Ha curious – that’s what I call Hyper-observant and clever.
If the police really had a say in this whole matter they will write an official letter bearing their logo /coat of arms – signatures etc. not an amateur MS Word piece of paper written in hebrew which any wacky CHer will type up since they don’t know how to spell in English they had to make an ugly looking hebrew one. Now that is amateur!!!

  • a needed service

Its sad that selling things for yom tov which there realy is no proper market for them in crown heights will now be an unknown. They should set up propoer booths on kingston avenue next to 770 and rent them out this way they have some control of the situation. yes it is out of hand but it used to be just items for yom tov. Arba minim etc. these are things that are sold in front of every shul.

this is like the grinch who stole the yom tov spirit.

As far as crown heights stores. half of them dont give any customer service and neither do they carry these items. Additionally these stands keep the prices down. I do however agree the bbq stands have to go.
