Community Partakes in a National Night Out Against Crime
Crown Heights, Brooklyn – The ‘National Night Out Against Crime’ is a tradition in the Crown Heights community taking place for many years. It takes place each year on the first Tuesday of August where residents turn on their porch lights and ‘take the streets’ back from crime.

In recent years the Community Policing Unit of the 71st Precinct took the even a step further and made an even starting in the early noon and going on into the night with barbeques, drink along with fun and games for all to partake in.
Kosher food was donated anonymously by a resident in order to cater to the Jewish resident that attended.
Political figures such as the mayor Michal Bloomberg along with Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz attended along with police commissioner Raymond Kelly Brooklyn South Task Force CO Capt. Joseph Fox.
Jewish Community leaders included Rabbi Binyomin Klein, R. Tzvi Lang, Col. Yankel Goldstein, R. Avrohom Leider along with members of the Crown Heights’s Volunteer Patrol ‘Shomrim’.
This years night out took place on Maple Street between Bedford Ave and Rogers Ave, just one block where the senseless shooting of two police officers Russel Timoshenko, who died of his injuries, and Herman Yan, who was saved by his bulletproof vest. Sgt. Bobby Troise told CrownHeights.info that “by this event taking place [here] it shows our defiance against crime and how we will not be deterred”.

Friendship is beautiful. Unity is wonderful! The money, time and effort put into this endeavor is praisworthy, BUT:

Honestly is sounds like: “The Police and citizens against the Criminals.”
This sounds like some type of competition. How much are the tickets? When does the game start?
Who will win the game? Plenty of crime each year: muggings, rapes, murders, hate crimes, etc. Living in New York is no picnic.
I thought government was the agent of G-d and morality. The voice of the people. “The mighty voice of government has spoken!”
After all, the government declares wars, destroys whole cities, executes criminals, spends vast sums on public works, engages in complex undertakings (space exploration), etc.
According to my thinking if a criminal contemplates a theft, mugging, murder, etc. he should be shaking in his/her place, afraid to lift a hand — scared silly of the power of the government!
I guess I had it wrong.
Any cheap tickets around?
I’m too busy working trying to pay my children’s tuition to make up for the cruel application of the “Separation Clause.”
