The driver who hit me was making a left-hand turn onto Eastern Parkway and was definitely not paying to attention to my position. While I doubt that he deliberately chose to knock me over, he was certainly distracted. Perhaps he was on a cell-phone or thought that he could make the turn without striking a pedestrian who was clearly three quarters of the way across the street.

A Note on Crossing the Street!
Recently, as I was returning from the Mikvah on Shabbos morning, I was struck by a car. By the Grace of Hashem, I suffered no injuries. I crossed the street at the intersection of Troy and Eastern Parkway with the light in my favor and I was attentive to all cars.

I write these words because every day I witness near accidents on Eastern Parkway. I see the cars turning onto Albany Avenue directly into the path of pedestrians who have the right-of-way crossing the street. I also see those who chose to go across in the middle of the street – not at an intersection, and risk more serious injuries, R”L.
I wish to make everyone aware of these dangers so that we may do all we can to prevent accidents. Parents should tell children that it is not sufficient to just “look right & left” but to constantly pay attention to the moving traffic. We must also show an example ourselves in observing all traffic signals.
Sincerely,
Baruch Rubinstein

thank u for this! we must indeed be careful with these intersections. turning from eastern parkway to albany ave is a pressured turn because you’re coming from a fast pace and then u have to immediately slow down for pedestrians… the key is to pretend you’re hitting a stop sign so that u slow down enough to be able to carefully search for pedestrians crossing.

Dear Baruch Rubinstein, so correct!
I live on Union St. btwn. Schenectady and Utica. I crossed Union Street on the south-east side, one evening, to the north-east side and a car making a left turn, going south, (Onto Union Street-Towards Utica) came withing 2 inches of me. Very disconcerting!
It was a car service. I saw the license plate and called the co. The response was very friendly and polite. I warned them about the poor driving habits of their employees.
I will always cross mid-block. It’s safer, probably everywhere.
Government — take notice!

Thanks to the almighty you are unharmed.
This is an ongoing problem in CH and elsewhere. Some people refuse to obey the law and common sense while driving.
To use a cell phone without a hands free device (earpiece) while driving is illegal and dangerous, disregarding a yellow or red light is illegal and dangerous, not signaling before aturn is illegal and dangerous. I have even seen people reading (seforim) while driving!
For the safety of us all, pedestrians and drivers, obey the law, and use common sense while driving. A moving vehicle is a weapon; you wouldn’t walk up to someone and hit them with a club, why risk hitting them with something that weighs two tons and is moving!
It is a miracle you are safe and well.
May we all benefit from your experience, and through our deeds and actions merit the coming of Moshiach in our lifetime.
Let-s practice safer driving!
We can all certainly make our streets safer for the many children that cross on their own, by being slower, more observant drivers. I recently had to step into the street and hold my hand up to a car being driven by bochurim, to allow two young boys who had the right of way, to safely cross Empire. Drivers must realize that eventhough it is their light and are allowed to turn, pedestrians crossing come first!
