Police: “There is No Real Need to Shut Down Eastern Parkway”

Discussing issues at Monday nights meeting.

Crown Heights, Brooklyn – With this years Lag BaOmer Parade just days away, parade organizers were forced to deal with an issue regarding the permits for the parade.

Police say that they feel that there isn’t any real interest in such events anymore and that the turnout doesn’t justify shutting down the entire parkway and the service lane would be enough.

The parade takes place on such a scale every year that Lag BaOmer falls out on a Sunday, the last year that the parade took place was in 2004, and the organizers were faced with the same issue.

Organizers told CrownHeights.info that this year, in order to avoid any problems with the permits they had arranged a schedule and plan 8 months in advance.

Monday night an emergency meeting was held with the participation of community leaders and Menahali Moisdos in order to discuss the issues with the permits and a course of action was mapped out.

Tuesday morning a Minyan of those that attended the meeting made a trip to the Ohel to Daven and read a pa”n following which a meeting took place with the Brooklyn South Borough Commander, Assistant Chief Joseph Fox and many leaders and persons of influence attended.

At the meeting Mr. Fox related that he was impressed with the great show of support all the leaders have been showing, and all the politicians that called in to show their support. A number of proposals were brought up.

The meeting concluded with the feeling that the matter would be resolved and the parade will continue as originally planned.

A groiser yosha koach to all those participants in the effort who by their actions have taken a large step towards being machriya ratzon haBoreh, Baruch Hu, to bring about a speedy and peaceful end to golus. Whether or not this is not a case of misplaced optimism, it stands as a clear and powerful musar haskel that with achdus all m’nios v’ikuvim can be overcome; including the those that stand in the way of the geulah shaleima.

  • well done

Yasher koach to everyone who worked so hard to make the parade happen. Amazing what a little achdus can do!

  • ch resident

they got permission to block of eastern pkwy at around noon this afternoon

  • ch resident

On the one hand the police are correct, the turn out at the last parade was very low, except for the local schools not many residents actually showed up to watch the parade.
However the lack of police cooperation with the community is shocking. They have not solved the murder of Mr. Kline and it seems that the only time they apprehend any mugger or thief is when they are grabbed by the shmira/shomrim first (or it seems when they are arresting Jewish guys when the community politics gets too rowdy).
If we are not careful they will ban the simchas beis next.
It is time for the community council or the other leaders of the community to show the police our displeasure by complaining to the mayor etc…
The politicians must be made aware that if something is not done to change the attitude of the police towards our community; they will not get our votes by the next election.

  • ch girl

This was only done once the organizers promised a huge turnout. If there isn’t at least 15000 ppl there the police wont let them close eastern pkwy. ever again.

  • anonymous

come on the police can block off THE WHOLE eastern prkwy for labor day but not for lag baomer! chutzpah

  • parade fan

PLEASE DO ALL YOU CAN TO ATTEND THE PARADE ON SUNDAY! URGE FAMILY AND FRIENDS TO BE THERE AT 10 AM!
    THANK YOU

  • sholom

the cops are bunch of low lifes 2 faced they smile when they see you and spit behind your back they dont like anyone in this community they laugh in our faces

  • Mr. Logic

    the polica are right!

Why does the whole parkway need to be closed! the service lane or half the parkway is more then enough.

Again we think that if we do not get what we want they are being biased towards us.

Did we forget that 8 million ppl live in NY!!!!!

  • enough is enough

if the community does not start to stand up for ourselves we will only see this get worse!

  • V-CHAIN YAASU

A BIG YASHER KOACH GOES TO RABBI SHIMON HECHT AND HIS TEAM OF ORGANIZERS, FOR ORGANIZING THIS EVENT WITH TOTAL ACHDUS, FROM ALL SIDES OF THE SPECTRUM.
I AM SURE THE REBBE AND RABBI JJ ARE HAVING MUCH NACHAS FROM THIS TEAM WORK.
    KEEP IT UP!!!

  • BEIS RIVKA GIRL

    DEAR ANASH,
IT IS OF UTMOST IMPORTANCE FOR EVERY MAN WOMEN AND CHILD TO SHOW UP AT THE PARADE AT 10:00 SHARP. PLEASE TELL FAMILY AND FRIENDS, SPREAD THE WORD!!!!!
THIS IS THE REBBE’S “BABY” AND AS HIS CHASSIDIM WE DO ALL WE CAN TO MAKE SURE IT HAPPENS. IN BRHS, EACH GIRL WAS GIVEN A FEW PHONE NUMBERS AND THE WHOLE TZACH LIST WAS COVERED. THEY ARE TELLING EVERYONE THE IMPORTANCE. EVERY PERSON COUNTS!!!

  • Reuven

Moshe Rubashkin, the Hechts, Tsivos Hashem, and Harvey Lang got the NYPD to reverse the decision. The Police backed off and the CHJCC Vaad won. Now how’s that for community leadership?

  • How can they do this to us?

in agreement with “anonymous”, I have to say that the labor day parade blocks off the entire crown heights, no one leaves their house because the place is full of drunkards and meshugoyim…
Oh, but when the Jewish community wants to block off Kingston for simchas bais hashoeva and Eastern parkway for lag baomer… how can we just sit and let them say no? How can they treat us like this????

  • lizman

    the truth is

they will close eastern parkway but will NOT let them close empire blvd so the big “fair” will be on kingfston

they also will as of now NOT let the motorcycle show

    yeah a great victory riggghhhhtttt

  • yossi

The organizers of the parade should make an interesting program, good speakers,(not the usual rally speakers)so that even adults would want to come.

  • Sholom

what about pictures of everyone that was there at the meeting. I heard all the big shots were there

  • to anonymous

there are at least one million people attending the labor day parade. how can you compare to 1,500 people?

  • Mordy

The word is now out on the street: Shimon Hecnt and Moshe Rubashkin got the police to change their mind and close off Eastern Parkway. Yasher koach gentlemen!

  • THE REAL MR. LOGIC

To MR. LOGIC, you infruriate me. Don’t you realize how precious this parade was to the Rebbe? Don’t you know how the Rebbe said that if he had a taiva, this would be it???? It’s not a matter of biased, it’s a matter of fighting for our Rebbe. The police commissioner himself said that if the Rebbe would be here begashmius, the entire parkway would be closed off, without question. Are you really being logical?

  • A teacher

    To Mr. Logic:
So you think that the service lane is enuph, just for your information last parade there was no parade, the floats drove down the main parkway the children could not see and when it came time to march the children couldnt because the service lane was blocked by the chairs they had been sitting on. We as legal tax paying residents have the right to hold a peacfull parade. The fact that they cant give a legitimate reason for denying the permit for, said parade, is the cause for the rightfull cry of Anti Semitisam. Yes there are 8 million pple living in new york and many a time i have been inconveinanced for others affairs, now others will have to be for mine.

  • Good morning

1)The notes from the schools should have asked parents to participate in the parade because we need a crowd.
    2)Did we invite other schools?
3)We should have the army any marching band that wants to paricipate. Where is Jake Goldstein?

  • depressed

look, noones being biased to anyone else…those in charge said they would block off all of eastern parkway if the Rebbe was still with us: he obviously attracted a bigger turnout than we ever can. however this is something for our community and for chabad-lubavitch. crown heightser: you owe it to yourselves to make sure this place doesnt go down the drain and that we actually get some recognition!! any out of towners: please come join us. thats all. iyh this will not be a problem after all because we will be dancing and drumming on our way to yerushalyim with moshiach tzidkenu! amen!

  • Avi

    to Mr. logic:
two years ago we didn’t have the service lane and the parade was very messed up as a result. we are RESIDENTS asking for ONE block, while on labor day it’s OUT OF CROWN HEIGHTSERS GETTING THE WHOLE EASTERN PARKWAY AND MORE (it’s impossible to get into crown heights by car on labor day). and it just so happens to be they frequently go over time.

  • go yankees and mets

well did they get a permit or not
and is there a permit for the carnavel

  • To Reuven

    Reuven,

You are right..good leadership. It is a shame that this is probably one of the few times that sappy politics did not get in the way

  • YEHUDIS E.

i DOMN’T HAVE TE TIME TO READ ALL THE COMMENTS SO I MIGHJT BE REPEATING SOMETHING SOMEONE ALREADY SUGGESTED. WITH ALL DUE RESPECT TO ALL THOSE INVOLVED, YOU HAVE NOTHING TO LOSE BY WRITING TO THE REBBE (REMEMBER HIM) AND INMFORMING HIM OF THE SITUATION AND REQUESTING A BROCHA. IT WORKED BEFORE FOR SHIA HECHT WITH A FUND RAISING BANQUET SITUATION. THERE IS NOTHIG TO LOSE AND EVERYTHING TO GAIN (PLUS, I WOULD GET ANOTHER STORY OUT OF IT….)

  • rabbi yecheskel moses england

you cant blame the police.they are looking to see what parade is produced now how close is it to our hearts.are we living with the rebbas teachings even greater now and to produce an even greater parade now.it is up to us to secure automatic clearance for the future.
