Five Missings in One Day – Shomrim to the Rescue

A handful of Shomrim Volunteers pose for a picture outside their Mobile Command Center on Kingston Avenue last night.

Crown Heights and Boro Park Shomrim had a really busy day Monday; together, they both successfully handled five missing person incidents. From an intoxicated 15-year-old who vanished in Crown Heights, to a 3-year-old child who wandered away from her parents on a the Coney Island boardwalk.

Thank G-d, in each of the incidents the children were found and safely returned to their families.

The first incident began at 4:00am when a non-Chabad teenager from New Jersey ‘over-celebrated’ Simchas Beis Hashuevah in Crown Heights, and was found unconscious on a sidewalk. Hatzalah took him to the Hospital where he remained in detox overnight, while his family panicked after he did not show up all night.

Later that day, a Shomrim volunteer was flagged down on Kingston when someone spotted a 2-year-old wandering the street alone, a search for the mother was organized and she was found frantically searching for her child in 770. Police were on hand to assist in the search, but were B”H not needed.

Meanwhile, in the Luna Park on Coney Island’s boardwalk two children went missing: a 3-year-old and a special-needs 13-year-old.

Volunteers responded in from Shomrim of Boro Park, Crown Heights and Flatbush, as well as Chaveirim of Seagate. They coordinated a massive search of the area; volunteers on bicycle and on foot scoured the boardwalk and both children were B”H found.

The day ended at the children’s program at the Simchas Beis Hashuevah on Kingston where a Shomrim member found a 2-year-old crying and looking for her parents. Shomrim brought the child to the stage, and a short while later she was reunited with her parents.

CrownHeights.info would like to take this opportunity to recognize Shomrim for their outstanding work, and thank them for the peace of mind they bring to parents in such chaotic times. When a child goes missing at a park or an event parents don’t know where or whom to turn to, but Shomrim is there. Thank you!

  • stop the drinking!

    Shomrim are the best!

We know kids wander off….it’s hard to keep track sometimes when there are so many people all in one place. But a drunken teen from NJ? Where were THOSE parents, letting him come here unsupervised, presumably with “friends” who clearly abandoned him? Who gave him all the liquor?

Hope they at least give a fat donation to CH hatzalah.
