Hendel’s Kapores Price Gouging Idea Vs. Hecht’s $4 Chickens

Businessmen and landlords pitched in to help alleviate some of the burden of the cost of Kapores, allowing NCFJE to offer chickens at $4 a pop instead of the normal $10, but Mendy Hendel had a different idea – reaching out to Shea Hecht and suggesting that together they raise the prices and make more money!

“When [Hendel] heard about our $5 chickens he sent a messenger, because he does not speak to me, and suggested that we should both raise our prices and we can make more money like this” came the shocking revelation from Rabbi Shea Hecht.

This revelation came amid a casual conversation with Rabbi Hecht who fumed at the audacity to even suggest such a thing. “People are struggling enough as it is with the costs of the Yomim Tovim and this is what this man, who supposedly does Hachnosas Orchim, suggests we do?” asked Hecht, “I think not.”

Rabbi Hecht added that he was approached by Moshe Gad, a philanthropist and diamond magnate, who had subsidized last year’s Kapores, with the wishes to do the same again this year. The chickens were slated to cost $5, but a 5th hour donation from Crown Heights landlord R. Dovid Fischer further reduced prices to a final $4.

An additional one thousand chickens were made available as well, as last year the supply depleted rather quickly.

    one side bombs the other for crippling the community for just a thought of raising the prices
    but on the other hand he stands with a kaporo in his hand ready to ask forgiveness for the past , at the same time talking bad about another jew and stirring out major controversy on erev yom kipper

    although i don’t like what i read, this is aseres yemei tshuva and we don’t need to spout loshon hora for all to see on a public website. fixing prices is wrong, and making a profit off of struggling families is really wrong. however, not every person in the neighborhood needs to read about every ugly interaction that takes place between various people in the community. it’s doing more harm than good to our community to magnify every wrongdoing for all to see.

    first of all it probably cost him over $10.000.

    secondly, he does not need to buy himself in, the same pepole who think he is now in. are the ones who want to kill osdaba, who was the one that tried kicking fisher out, so you cant have it bothe way.,

    last but not least, having issues with crown heights, does not mean you have issues with lubavitch, crown height and lubavitch couldne be further apart, that is why the CH comunity needed to have elected rabonim, as the real Nosi was not good enugh for them.

    It seems to me that it’s harder to do good for this community than to do bad! the Hechts are are the front of helping all the time. Food, kaparos, etc. If it were about the money they would take the subsidy and keep the prices higher. Call it fund raising like most organizations do. They are out to help people do what is considered a necessity without it being too much of a financial burden. You hardly hear the community thanking them, and when Shea ran for the board there was a movement to make sure he didn’t make it. I’m guessing that came from the people who’d like to gouge the community members for all their worth!

    Sounds like Hecht got paid for chicken already by sponsors, let G-d grant them long life. Hecht is comfortable to drop price to $4. This surely would attract large crowd leaving out other organizers [who cannot afford dropping price to $4] in red thus driving them out of business.

    Accordingly, I dont think it is fare for Hecht to say, quote:

    Rabbi Hecht is an askan and a community leader.

    Hendel is a moiser, a baal machloikes, a gonif, and stain on his noble family’s name (and I mean his family going back to Aharon haCohen.)
