Carroll St. Residents Meet with the Local Precinct Command

On Chol HaMoed Sukkos Residents of Carroll Street arranged a meeting the Command of the 71st Precinct which included the Commanding Officer D.I. Vega, Executive Officer Cpt. Shouldis and Lt. Cantwell, also present from the Precinct were Community Affairs officers Martinos and Gordon

The meeting stemmed from an outrage of the residents at the spike in crime on and around Carroll St. the meeting took place in the Raiim Ahuvim Shul on the Corner of Carroll and Schenectady and was not advertised, just the residents of Carroll St were notified. At 8:00pm the Shul filled up with Men, Woman and Children a number of which were victims of past crimes, all were present to make a demand for a resolution.

The meeting opened up with the crowd hearing about crimes committed from a few of the victims; Alex got up from the crowd and told of an incident he had on Carroll between Troy and Schenectady where a group black youths threw firecrackers at him, laughed and cursed at him, he stated that he remembered the signs that police had put up regarding illegal fireworks so he called 911 and waited for over an hour for police to respond, to which they didn’t, he then made his way to 770 where he knew there were Officers posted and told them of his incident which they notified him was an issue he had to call 911 about. The next day the same thing happened only this time he gave up and moved on about his business.

Another resident Yossi Mattis got up and told of a mugging that took place on Carroll and Troy where he was approached by three Black men one of which pulled a gun and demanded his money, he called 911 who responded and filed a police report.

The next to get up was Yitchok Druk another Carroll Street resident who was brutally assaulted on Carroll between Albany and Troy by three or four Black men one of which held him down while the other kicked and punched him in the face and all over his body, police were called and a report had been filed. When following up on his case with the precinct he was shocked to find out that there was no such report ever filed, and after calling for a few weeks the police finally found the report which had been misfiled as ‘Harassment’ rather then ‘Assault’.

The last to speak was Mrs. Wiesman, a 73 your old lady who lives on Carroll Street as well and was walking one morning on Carroll between Albany and Troy was approached by a Black man and woman and was thrown to the ground and was kicked and punched, her eyes still bore the marks of the brutal and senseless assault in the form of two black eyes. The two perps made off with her purse. The incident was handled by Shomrim and can be read about by Clicking Here.

After hearing from these residents, who are only a few of the many victims, Mr. Vega the Precinct Commander got up and address the issues at hand; he started by saying that he will not insult the crowd with statistics ‘as we all can see that they don’t apply here’, the C.O. then went into detail explaining how when the overall crime rate in any precinct’s area what is done is an evaluation as to where crime is still problematic and according to those results resources would be shifted into those areas.

For the month of Tishrai when Crown Heights is full of all the guests a much larger police presents in necessary regardless of crime, in order to prevent it. But given the circumstances a lot more officers were rotated into the neighborhood on top of those already allotted due to the crime factor. Mr. Vega explained how resources are taken from other precincts that are under the Brooklyn South Command and placed on foot post or car posts around these areas.

Special equipment brought in as a crime deterrent was the Sky-Watch portable watch tower, which was used more in pilot testing mode was used as a deterrent and was placed on Troy and Carroll, along with two mobile command posts, Mr. Vega explained how the Brooklyn South Task Force (BSTF) has only two command posts under its command and are always in service, this time both were placed in the neighborhood with one on Crown and Albany and the other on Schenectady and Carroll, he explained that these devices often need maintenance as they are in such high use and we shouldn’t expect either of the devices to remain ‘forever’.

Next up to speak was Mrs. Henna White, community liaison to the District Attorneys Office, who told the crowd how the DA was taking each case seriously and is vigorously prosecuting those criminal that had been apprehended.

Following this was a Q&A session with the C.O. Mr. Vega where residents vented and complained as to what bothered them among the issues raised was how reports were being swept under the rug and how we don’t feel the police wanting to protect us to which he responded that reports being swept under the rug will not be tolerated and he will make sure this no longer happens.

The meeting concluded with the C.O. saying that we should not wait this long for our next meeting, and that sitting on such things don’t lead to good things. If you are a block association leader and want to arrange such a meeting with the precinct contact the precinct and speak to the C.O.

there is need for the federal govt. civil rights division to become involved. the local police will not solve the problem. what’s happening here is the "deep throating "[cover up]of information proving that the local cops are not pursuing the ant-semitic crimes that are being perped.the canard is that the community counsel refuses to be a client in this matter. the community must demand involvment by the feds. speak with dr. boruch bush. he is most knowledge-able in these matters.

thinking about this i am basicelly speachless
we must do more of these
when you have someone in charge of a police and doesnt know about certian things going on in his community that is sick
we have to make more and more meeting of such kinds to let them know that we wont sit back and do nothing and to let them know that you can shove certian things under the rug but push comes to shove you cant hide it anymore
this community is getting worse and worse, we must take it back and make it safe to walk aroung whenever it is at 4pm or 11pm or even 7-8am
keep it up and every body should know that no matter where you live on carroll, president, or lefferts we are one community and we will stand up for each other
    kan tzivah hashem es abrocho

I was there and here are some comments about Commanding Officer D.I. Vega:

    1. If you care about your job you would make notes and follow them through later.

He did not take any notes…..

    2. No matter what you say, you can not care about people in the area if your children do not live here.

He said that he shares our concerns because his family is in Brooklyn….

    3. If you are a Commanding Officer and want to do something real about the crime you would have a real plan and you would share this plan with residence.

He was delivering a nice speech, telling us how many new officers he has and how much maintenance new equipment needs, but besides rearranging officers he had no plan…

You can derive your conclusions about him and his ability/desire to do his job.

I was at the community-police meeting on Tues. night, Oct 10th at Rea Ahoovim and a Mr. Y.B. (artist) told his story: On Yud Tet Kislev he was walking up Carroll St was suddenly jumped by 3, seemingly peaceful, Black males. They punched him in the face (nose bleed) twisted his arm and stole his backpack, and box with Sushi (Japanese style food).
The main criminal was arrested 40 times and the 71Pct listed it as ”harrassment!“ This was brought up at the meeting. The head officer, Vega (inspector?) said he would look into it.
Y.B said: ”Why pursue this case any more? If the criminal finds out who I am, I’m in danger. It seems the authorities are protecting him.“
Friends, we live in a society where the ”authorities“ (so-called) are letting criminals go to attack the public. It’s an immoral and evil criminal justice system. What do the judges, etc care? They have guns and we don’t. They don’t live in bad neighborhoods. How many criminals would attack a home knowing a cop lived there?
Is this ”The land of the free and home of the brave? One nation, under G-d, indivisible with liberty and justice for all?” DONT’ BELIEVE THIS NONSENSE!
    IT’S ALL HOLLYWOOD, SHEKER! FANTASY!
P.S. I heard there was an attack on a group of Lubavitchers motzei-Shabbos coming back, on telucha, from Boro Park or Kingston, by a group of Arabs. Is it true?

    "Carrol st resident wrote:

it is because of people of your ilk that we do not get anything done in this community.

why does everything have to do with politics? i do not like any of the vaad yahoo members, but at least Nash was there.

you all have each other to blame for electing such claws and nut-jobs to the vaad, rabbonim and grimm

  • Carroll St Albany Troy

Just a note that since the meeting there has been an almost 24 hr police presence outside 1510 & 1520 Carroll Street btwn Albany & Troy. The block has had the quietest month in the past few years!
So the meeting did help at least for this point.

BTW, the firecrackers that were thrown at "Alex" for over an hour were thrown from 1520 Carroll which is between Albany and Troy.

In addition, DI Vega said that we should notify him quickly and not let things fester. I left him a message regarding a trick that the perps pulled on 3 of his officers at the EP Schenectady subway station, and he never returned the call.
I also handed him (in person) my phone number and asked him to call me regarding the violence and guns that abound on Carroll btwn Albany & Troy. I have not heard a peep from him.
    Go figure!
Oh…..and Professor Bush spoke tremendously. I wonder if he spoke like that when he was a Vaad Hakohol member. If he did I would vote for him any day!
Bottom line is that for the next elections we should try and get a slate to run with a mix of young blood who will push the authorities to act as well as a couple of older calmer heads who will smooth talk and "lek" the authorities, sort of a good cop bad cop (pardon the pun) team. Lately there are a lot of young guys stepping up to the plate to bat for Crown Heights and this got to be encouraged.

  • Itzik_s

DI Vega does not seem up to the job, but for now he is all we have to work with. Keep calling him, and document cases of non-response – if there are enough cases maybe there is something we can do about it.

The main problem seems to be that we are located in a precinct that includes areas where we do not live, but which have even bigger crime problems than we do (and are the sources for those who commit crimes against us). Manpower is insufficient to protect every street, so using statistical analysis, manpower is concentrated where the criminals are, which is outside the boundaries of "the shchuna."

We need to speak up more so that our community gets more protection, especially as of course we do not harbor violent criminals among ourselves but rather are the victims of criminals from outside our part of the CH community. The precinct council meetings are a good place to start but maybe we need to meet with someone at 1 Police Plaza as well.

  • Carroll St Albany Troy

    To Itzik_s,

    One correction to your comments.
Do not delude yourself into beleiving that the buildings in our shchunah, ie 1510 1520 Carroll, Kingston btwn Empire & Lefferts, President btwn Alb & Troy, President & Schenectady, just to name a few do not harbout violent criminals that assualt us day and night.
You may be right that most of the drug related violence is a few blocks out but our muggers are neighbours as well.

  • Resident on Carroll

It would be a great idea to have residents keep their lights on in the front and that the trees on Carroll btw Albany and Troy be cut, They are hover over the street completely making it very dark and an esy spot for these Animals. The city must also put up more street lights on that block.

  • Itzik_s

Yes, thanks for the heads up. I did not know about some of the others, but I sure did forget about Kingston between Albany and Lefferts.

But what I also meant by "outside of our part of the CH community" is that BH Anash does not include violent criminals in its midst, and that we are victims only where violent street crime is concerned.

  • Fan of Nash

    To: carrol st resident…..

The reason Nash was there was for one reason-he cares. Unlike the other Vaad members who talk and say that crime is unacceptable and something must be done about it….did any of those big talkers DO a thing?? No. Who did??? Leibish Nash. He does what needs to be done-no big talking here, he does and deserves to be commended for doing not criticized for doing something productive for this community. Nash did what he could do, what’s in his power to do, to get the police to listen to what the community has to say, after that he has no power.

I am so livid at the blatant and obvious INEPTITUDE by your local precinct!

A drastic situation needs drastic steps. Look at your pictures on this blog, sitting there at the meeting, all religious-looking Jewish citizens of New York, and you are pleading for protection from the local ‘city’s finest’ against a few guys practicing terrorists maneuvers!

I’m sorry, but doesn’t that look like what happened in Europe? You’ve tried the PC tract, now do something else.

Forget about the local precinct! TAKE THE WHOLE SITUATION TO THE NYTIMES, NYPOST, NYDAILYNEWS, BUT FIRST TO THE MAYOR!

Jewish neshomas in the neighborhood are under attack!

I wrote before. Set up a 2-man surveillance going up and down your block, carrying cellphones and maybe flares to fire in the sky, to notify the precinct. Something like that! This is just as important as ‘having a seder in learning’.

Please do something more. It is hurting us to see this happening.

  • to boruch hoffinger

To baruch Hoffinger- yes it is true a group of bachurim were approached on the way back from tahaluch- i’m not sure if it was arabs or blacks and they started chasing them. all bachurim tried running away but two were punched ….one in the neck…it was my friend’s brother so i know it’s true…

  • Not CS

We will talk to Rubashkin about the CHJCC and the Civil Rights Division of the Justice Department. It all has to start with the Eastern District US Attorney, a Pataki person and a Jewish woman, Rosyln Mauskopf.

But remember how nearly impossible it was to get the feds to use federal laws to prosecute Lemerick Nelson! It took Senator Schumer’s constant advocacy to get the feds to indict the murderer.

Put the pressure on DA Hynes and the city council members. That’s who the NYPD must report to.
And above all, the Mayor, the Mayor, and the Mayor.

  • ACTION

    B"H

Here on my block, Union btwn. Schenectady and Utica they once sold a lot of drugs (10 years ago). The police couldn’t arrest them because the pushers (Hispanic, Black, etc) kept a small quantity on their person and left the majority in brown bags on the floor, or in auto hubcaps. Cars of every make and description stopped there.
Going to the roof of my building I dropped a cinder block on a pushers nice car, smashing his sun-roof. He never returned.
I’m a "real American," remember the Boston Tea Party.
Unfortunately when the authorities hands are tied we must take action.
Once 2 men were playing a "Boombox" across from my bedroom window. Called 71Pct. Cops came. Noise started again. Called again. Cops exited car, approached the 2 nuts and they stood up and headed north towards Eastern Pkwy. After disobeying the law their radio should have been confiscated, at least!
I starting using a device to quiet late-night (2AM) noisemakers—worked just fine! Scared the life out of them. They took off! Try it some time! It makes a popping sound, and at night it’s scary. Sounds like a gun.

  • Carroll St Albany Troy

    Call from Inspector Vega.

Just an update to my earlier comments that the Inspector did finally return my call and sounded pretty sincere.( I wonder if he reads this blog!) He said that he will try and keep the police presense on my block and is happy that "my perps" have chosen to stay out of sight rather then make trouble on sorrounding blocks.
Based on this I would tell everyone to keep calling and see if you can help clean up your block.

  • crown st

It’s pathetic that one way-after-the-fact phone call can make our residents feel reassured. So now you’ll back off, which is what the cops want. Is that why they’re all busy on cell phones…they are sweet-talking us wimps.

Sorry, Carroll St Albany/Troy… you’re now doing what the 71 wants for a nice, quiet life. You’re making nice to the cops (contrast your earlier, angrier entries) and best of all, you’re going away!

    Yay!

  • Carroll Street Albany/Troy

Crown Street, I hear u loud and clear.
I will call back as soon as trouble starts again on my block. The thing is that in the winter the troublemakers are too cold to leave their buildings so there is much less trouble. As I mentioned to my wife last night, we will need to call again before the spring to make sure that the cops are ready for the inevitable hate crimes that occur yearly on the block.
Right now I can’t complain about a uniformed officer standing in the lobby of the trouble buildings most of the day and night.
However, I will remain vigilant and will call when I feel that there is a need.
