Leaders of the Crown Heights Jewish Community Council met with Deputy Mayor Dennis Walcott, Brooklyn District Attorney Charles J. Hynes, City Council Member Letitia James, and representatives from the New York City Police Department (NYPD) to discuss actions being taken to combat the recent wave of crimes in the area.
Reacting to a series of muggings and assaults where local residents have been brutally attacked by roving gangs, District Attorney Hynes gave his assurance that he will work with the community and the police to keep track of all incidents and to prosecute those caught to the fullest extent of the law. Mr. Hynes also presented certificates of honor to two local residents who helped the NYPD arrest three of the recent attackers who assaulted a young man on his way home from synagogue on the night of Yom Kippur.

Dr. Tzvi Lang, Crown Heights Jewish Community Council Vice-Chair, thanked District Attorney Hynes and Deputy Mayor Walcott for taking the time to come directly to Crown Heights to discuss the numerous violent attacks on local residents.
“Mayor Bloomberg is telling us that he cares and that Crown Heights matters to him,” Dr. Lang said, adding that “we have the Mayor’s attention and commitment to keeping Crown Heights a safe and welcoming community. People should feel as safe here as anywhere else during this month of major holidays.”
“The safety of our communities is our number one priority,” said Deputy Mayor Walcott. “Working alongside the Crown Heights community leadership and together with the NYPD and the District Attorney’s office, we’ll ensure that community’s concerns are heard and that the City is responsive in taking action to keep our neighborhoods safe.”
NYPD Deputy Inspector Frank Vega, commanding officer of the 71st precinct, also informed local leaders that two mobile command centers are being located in the community. These mobile command centers are available to residents to report incidents voice their safety concerns to the NYPD. One command center is located at Albany Avenue at Crown Street while a NYPD surveillance tower has been placed at Troy Avenue at Carroll Street and another command center located at Schenectady Avenue between Carroll Street and Crown Street, all scenes of several recent attacks.
Council Member Letitia James also committed her efforts to help obtain community surveillance cameras and to work with the Mayor’s Office to find available funds to directly help fight crime in the neighborhood.

Stop talking, let’s see some action.
Forget about the Certificates, just prosecute the perps and give them the maximum penalty.
In some of the pictures you can see C.O. Vega with fake concern on his face. We still need to teach the perps a lesson of "street justice". But be careful not to get caught by the police. Because then they will not give you a Certificate.
jose in az
Of course vega is concerned. his poor job will be aired to the public.

get rid of the cerificates and get to work. it is about time that such a jewish populated area is well fortified! it should be that crime and violence are not tolerated, and if it was so then there would be none!!! so put whoever needs to go behind bars, so we can all live safely.

Guys, I understand and share your frustration, but dissing Inspector Vega on this forum is not going to help the situation.
If you do have specific complaints, bring them to the attention of someone who can do something if discussing the problem with him does not get you anywhere. Also, if it has not been done already, we need to organize a formal meeting with him and a few non-political but concerned members of Anash.
Then, if we see we are getting nowhere, we can take it higher. But there are certain political and demographic facts in this neighborhood, and we could end up with an even worse situation by constantly attacking the local precinct head – or we could end up with a replacement who is far worse.
I have met him, and I do not think he is a rosho or an anti-Semite; I just think that a year might not have been enough time for him to get a real handle on the situation. I also think that he (and every other precinct commander in NYC) has certain political pressure placed on him by those who benefit from the coddling of criminals (and who are not necessarily from CH, but are part of the general Brooklyn and NYC power structure).

Why is everyone so negative? Look at the positive. Something is finally being done. And what’s wrong with giving certificates? If something happened to me, I’d like to show some appreciation to those that helped catch the perps. C’mon…

All well and good. The laws for "juveniles," I believe, are fairly
lenient. The "authorities" don’t consider anyone under 18 an adult; we do.
These vicious thugs could be back, doing the same thing, in a few months.
A cop on every corner won’t help if this is the state of affairs.

The usual BS with the usual cast of characters.
A Crown Heightser wannabe!!
I think that the reason that the first protest was a success, was because no bigwigs were involved. But it did show the guys with the titles that the residents of crown hieghts are not going to watch from the sidelines as they do nothing in the community council. Kudos for the protest,, it got things moving and lit fires under the bottoms of those who should have organized the protest to begin with.

yep. as we all know, cerificates go a long way in reducing crime.
what a load of useless BS

now for something not sarcastic:

PR, PR and PR…
“Mayor Bloomberg is telling us that he cares and that Crown Heights matters to him,” Dr. Lang said…
Mm-hm. Right. Yup. Meanwhile, Tyrone Perpson and his fellow [FILL IN YOUR EPITHET OF CHOICE]s are still out there prowling for their next victims.
Meetings won’t help. Crackin’ Tryone’s skull will. But, of course, that’s a bias crime, which will bring waves of cops down to arrest the hapless Jew…

To BOURCH N. HOFFINGER,
The law actually can try anyone 16 yrs and older as adults in these situations. It was changed a few years ago.
TO: BOURCH N. HOFFINGER
FYI: One of the preps that were caught after the YK incident is 16 and Hynes’ office (Brooklyn DA) is going to have him prosecuted as an adult.
