Lawmakers to Discuss Change to Alternate-Side Parking Law

BROOKLYN — A City Council meeting is planned tonight to discuss proposed legislation that could reduce parking headaches for drivers.

Specifically, the legislation would allow drivers to park on the restricted side of a street if the street has already been cleaned or let them remain in their cars and move when the street is ready to be cleaned.

A study by Transportation Alternatives found that 28 to 44 percent of traffic on some New York City streets is generated by people looking for a parking spot.

Residents say the law would greatly reduce parking troubles and tickets. However, sanitation crews say some streets require more than one cleaning. Many also say it would be difficult for a traffic officer to know when a street has been cleaned.

Don’t understand why Crown Heights has alternate parking 4 days a week while the rest of Brooklyn has only 2 days, (don’t know about other areas).

If “it would be difficult for a traffic officer to know when a street has been cleaned,” then it means that the street sweepers aren’t doing a very good job, right? In that case they should just do away with street sweeping altogether, or reduce it to once a week.

    #3 CHResident,

Maybe we have 4 alternate parking rule days because there is so much trash thrown around in CHts? If that is the case, then the police should be giving more tickets for littering as opposed to so many street cleaning days!!!!!!!!!!111

“However, sanitation crews say some streets require more than one cleaning. Many also say it would be difficult for a traffic officer to know when a street has been cleaned. ”

The solution is very simple. Authorise santiation crews, and ONLY sanitation crews, to give tickets for blocking them. That way, if the cleaning truck doesn’t come by, you don’t get a ticket; if it does, and you don’t move, then you do.

They should do the same for bus lanes: put cameras on the bus, and anybody who is standing in a bus lane when the bus gets there gets photographed and gets an automatic ticket, no excuses accepted; but if you’re there only when the bus isn’t, and move as soon as you see the bus coming, then no ticket.

and what happens to double parked cars, do they have to move after the truck passes? so essentialy this change would eliminate the double parking option?

(and yes I know that double parking is technically illegal and allowed only as a courtesy, but we still need to do it, there is simply nowhere else to put the cars).

if they make this change it will mean that instead of double parking at 11 and then moving it back at 12:30, you will have to get in your car at 11 and sit there till the truck passes.

unless they continue to allow both (except on streets where there is no room for both like union street).

Maybe it’s because our community council doesn’t fight hard enough for its residents?

hello!! eastern pkwy we have 6 days a week! including shabbos!
    things have to change

  • eastern pkwy

oh and we cannot double park during street cleaning hours.

if the police dont know whether the street was cleaned or not, then they didnt do a good job cleaning it :)

To solve a problem with knowing the the block has been swept, place a automatic chalk marker on the sweeper. Much the way they paint dotted lines on the streets. Stop making excuses! The original intent of this law was to clean the streets, not raise revenue!…. or was it?
