NYPD Tickets Double Parked Cars during Street Cleaning

CROWN HEIGHTS [CHI] — Motorists were punished this afternoon, yet again, by the police departments traffic division. Over 10 drivers who parked on Crown Street between Albany and Kingston during street cleaning got a $115 double parking ticket.

According to the Department of Transportation “Double parking of passenger vehicles is illegal at all times, including street cleaning days, regardless of location, purpose or duration” meaning that when people double park during alternate side parking they can be legally ticketed.

Historically, there has been no enforcement of these tickets during street cleaning, but in this case the over zealous traffic agent, in this case officer L. Trotman, scored the city over $1,000 in fines.

“Better I just not move my car for alternate side parking, it would cost me less” said one fuming motorist, referring to the fine for not moving ones car is $45 compared to $115 for double parking.

  • Must have been a slow month

They always have to reach their quota, I guess they are short this month.

  • Frustrating!!!!!

If a police officer gives a ticket like this and a resident has to take off work or hire a babysitter to go down to court to fight the ticket (which is obviously wrong), the police dept. should reimburse for lost wages. I know I am dreaming, but it is so frustrating!!!!!

  • Gotta do something...

    What losers.
It’s really not fair. It happened to me too.
I think our cars should not be equipped with video cameras
    to catch the “perpetrators”.

  • Crown St Res

Weird…I was double parked on this block & I didn’t get a ticket. But I was at the Albany end of the block. I’m sure they’ll be dismissed, there was 1 minute to go before alternate side was over.

Isn’t it about time this archaic practice ended? Yes I know it’s to clean the streets, but how clean are they 30 minutes later?

  • unfortunately it will not be dismissed

The ticket is legal, a cop has to be a real chazzer to give a ticket for this but it is at their discretion. This is a statement from the NYC.gov website….

“Double parking of passenger vehicles is illegal at all times, including Alternate Side Parking Regulation days, regardless of location, purpose or duration.”

  • shneur

VERY IMPORTANT! in case you are not trying to fight this
you should know that you can reduce all parking tickets online by 30% or so by just agreeing to an settlement that’s offered after you request a hearing, it takes about ten seconds

  • Common Sense

I understand a ticked being given to a vehicle thats obstructing traffic (by double parking), but this is ridicules.

It’s hard enough to find parking in general, what are we to do when half the street is taking away from us?

How long will it take till we have absolutely no quality of life in New York City?

  • inside looking in

the parking tickets are an illegal tax run by the government. all you can do is: eat the cost and don’t feel so bad when you are not 100% accurate with your taxes at the end of the year…

  • useless to fight

double parking is a courtesy generally extended during alternate side.Note the ticket says 1:29 pm & alt. side ends @ 1:30 pm on Crown Street. It is no use fighting since you are guilty until proven innocent. If they are going to continue this practice then 2 things must happen 1 no one move their cars for street cleaning & 2. Band together & sue the city in a class action lawsuit Complain to the New Vaad Hakahal & demand they take action. .This is part of their job!

We are being singled out and are being discriminated against.
If you go down just two blocks on Crown between Rogers and Bedford (out of the Jewish area ) where they have alternate between 8:00-9:30 AM you can observe numerous cars parked on the wrong side never being ticketed. I see this every alternate morning on the way to work ,and it is infuriating. In our area if you do not get a ticket for double parking you will get a ticket if you do not move your car by 1:31.As far as on my way home there are always at least 30-50 cars double parked on the Rogers Ave. stretch between Flatbush Ave. and Empire Blvd. and in all my years traveling this route I have NEVER seen one car ticketed.

  • Samuel Light

I am so happy to have moved out of NY… the number one reason I moved was, I was sick of having to always worry about my car. ENJOY the elected officials you voted for that allow this.

  • mad at 2 individuals

Let us address the issue closer to the source: other communities have arranged to have alternate side ONCE a week on each side. Our did not because OUR COMMUNITY BOARD 9 has chosen not to. Maybe they are paid off, maybe they have issues, but they should be dealt with- maybe with our new vaad…

  • Finally

Ah i was waiting for this to happen finally the cops are doing the right thing and you Crown Heights people don’t want to go and look for a new spot
i grew up in Crown Heights and when i was younger this is how it always was and guess what people moved to another spot or got a ticket now all of you think you are so holy well people get over it thats life!

  • Not a CH-er

I cant say i agree with you all. Although i got my fair share of tickets for double parking for only a minute, i think the NYPD are right in this case. They allow double parking as a courtesy. They have the full right to ticket as it is not a legal parking spot. Sorry, folks.

  • mahawa

everyone should plea not guilty, and say they were in synagogue praying.

  • crown height

To number 8 you just have such chuzzpa

Get over it do you have an exrtra $115 dollers in your pocket
    to dish out.

  • Joseph

Great job! How about the mother that can’t take their sick child to the doctor because their car is blocked in!!? of course any chance of honking the owner should come out.. no of course not.. and now you cause a stink you got a ticket!!! be thoughtful! I used to drive around BEFORE i left to work to make sure I was not on alternate side, and yes sometime I would be circling a good while and late for work. but hey that’s life of living in New York!

  • Josh

I salute the DOT for their actions which I feel they should have taken alot sooner. None of you complainers seem to give a hoot about the distress caused to legally parked car owners who can’t leave to their jobs or other appointments because they’re being blocked in by people who don’t even have the decency to leave their contact info on their windshields.

  • TO #8

and u think you’re so holy, just settle down. There are MANY more cars now than even 10 years ago, let alone 20, with the same amount of parking spaces. Where would you recommend the drivers move to? It’s really irrelevant anyway, it is still chazerish of the traffic cop, especially at 1:29, when the car will be legally moved to the other side in 1 minute – that makes it obvious it was just done in spite, yes, because they can. If they cared, they would wait until 1:31 and then give a ticket for not moving

  • To #8 Idiot you seem so happy

This is hard earned cash from our Jewish brothers who have enough baggage to carry. Why are you so happy.
As far as I know there is a pass for a lot of neighborhoods in brooklyn.

    Shame on You

  • really?

To #8, did ur psychiatrist give you several minutes break to go out and write that comment?

  • Stop whining

WEll, I don not live in CH but I’ll tell you what I actually do when it is alternate side of the srteet cleaning… I find a legal spot the night before. You all have no right to complain about getting ticketed. It is illegal to double park.

  • to #26

Dude you sure a clever person…

Come to Crown Heights at 11:00 PM at try to find a spot that won’t require you to move your car in the morning. I’ll sit on my porch and watch you circle for 2 hours, then when you give up, let us know if your still feeling so smart.

  • to #15 Finally

Sounds like you haven’t been to Crown Heights in a long long time. May I invite you come on over and experience the parking game that we have to endure every day?

  • to self righteous # 26

If you live out of CH, then you probably do not have such a parking problem like we do here. There are simply not enough legal spaces for everyone to park legally (as you put it) when alternate side parking is in effect. It has been the common practice for years to double park by alternate side parking.

ONE BIG OF ADVISE FOR ALL THE DOUBLE PARKERS….. LEAVE A NOTE WITH YOUR PHONE NUMBER OR ADDRESS ON YOUR DASHBOARD IN CASE THE PERSON YOU ARE BLOCKING HAS TO MOVE.

  • TO #15, 16, 26

#15 WOW! YOU MOVED OUT OF CROWN HEIGHTS! ARENT YOU LUCKY?! NO, NOT REALLY, YOU’RE AN IDIOT. THE COPS ARE 100% WRONG REGARDLESS OF THE LAW ETC ETC. WHEN THERE ARE SO MANY MORE CARS TO DEAL WITH THAN THERE WERE EVEN FIVE YEARS AGO THEY’VE GOT TO MAKE SOME ALLOWANCE FOR THE RIDICULOUS JOKE CALLED“STREET CLEANING” THE COPS, LIKE THE REST OF THE GOVERNMENT IS AS CORRUPT AS COULD BE. AS FOR #26 YOU SOUND SO SELF RIGHTEOUS! YES, I TRY TO DO THE SAME THING AS YOU, WHICH MEANS PARKING EARLY BEFORE THERE ARE NO SPOTS LEFT AND THEN BEING A PRISONER BECAUSE IF YOU TAKE YOUR CAR OUT TO GO TO A SIMCHA OR WHAT HAVE YOU YOU CAN SPEND THE NIGHT LOOKING FOR PARKING, OR PARK FIVE BLOCKS AWAY AND HOPE YOUR WALK HOME WILL BE A SAFE ONE.
THERE IS A SOLUTION THOUGH THAT WOULD MAKE THE STUPID SO CALLED COPS GO CROAK, IN CANARSIE THE SIDE STREETS (E54 ETC) DO NOT HAVE ALTERNATE SIDE AT ALL. THEY MADE AN AGREEMENT TO KEEP THE STREET CLEAN ON THEIR OWN, SO THE CITY SANITATION NEVER COMES DOWN THOSE STREETS AT ALL. IF PEOPLE ARE WILLING TO KEEP THE CURBSIDE IN FRONT OF THEIR HOMES CLEAN PERHAPS THEY CAN ARRANGE THE SAME THING, THEN YOU NEVER HAVE THE PROBLEM.

  • Sheichen Hashchunah

    To #16:

Do they really have a right? Once something has become an established practice then it begins to take on the color of law. The authorities should not be allowed to permit a practice and then at will and without warning revoke the privilege. At the very least there are grounds to fight the matter in court – as a class action suit. Additionally, there are creative ways, i.e., exercising civil disobedience, that can be used to make city hall see reason and fairness. Some suggestions offered on this site, that in turn might initiate some discussion in the community and result in leading to some relief from this abuse of power. For example: Why can’t some blocks designate some people to pull some ruse like moving a couple of cars into a diagonal positions on the block just as the meter maid arrives and then feign mechanical failure thus preventing the ticketing officer from driving on. This ploy will delay them on their rounds and annoy the hell out of them – it will most definitely get the attention of the authorities and force them to, at the very least listen. Sure there will be DOT retaliation but just think how the media would love a story like this “David confronts Goliath,” or “The Man In The Street Literally Fights Back,” or “Bloomberg Doesn’t Give a %^$/! About The Little Guy!” (probably best suited for the alternative media.) Now it’s your turn…

  • Josh L

What is with all the morons griping about “#8” ?
All this person is saying is that IF YOU ARE just going to pay the ticket without a fight, then you should at least go online and get a quick discount on the ticket.
Sometimes the lack of intelligence in people’s comments on this site is astounding.

  • impeachment

Let’s see what Zaki Tamir can do. Channina had the right connections. Let’s get the old- vaad back.

  • To # 32 (Josh)

That was not the original # 8 comment, if you look at #15, that was also #8, read it and then you will understand why everyone griped about it. CH.info must have removed the original # 8

  • #16

#31- Im not saying it is right to revoke a privilege that was given without prior notice. Sure, you are entitled to a warning, but this is NY. You are lucky you can breathe and not get taxed for it! Its the price you pay to live in Brooklyn though.
“the color of law”, as referenced by you, does not make it a law. It makes it a prilvigde. something that was taken for granted, perhaps…. Perhaps it was just an oversight by one misled NYPD cop who let it slide. It does not mean that the cop who ticketed is to blame. he is following the rules and the actual law (read the DOT quote above in the story). Double parking is illegal for good reason: its dangerous to pedestrians and also for those who are legally parked by the curb. The judge may lessen the fine if given the circumstances, but a class action law suit most likely will not favor the lot of you. It is costly, more costly than spending money for court fees and the ticket… regarding civil disobedience, is it worth it? how many people can you honestly say will give up a free day, a WORK day, to organise to do this? Maybe 8 if youre lucky. after all, this affected so few people.Civil disobedience rarely leads to a fufilled gain. Youre idea of putting cars horizontally down the street to block the flow of traffic is not constructive to getting the situation fixed. It wont allow the authorities to listen, but it will alow things to get worse and the ticketing increase. They will take this as an act of war. Who do you think the media will protray as goliath? Or david? Not so simple to answer. (besides, if no one died, the media doesn’t care)
if you go to the proper channels, you may actually get a result or a solution to the problem. You all have a community counsel for a reason. Utilize them. If you act like meshuganas, no one will take you seriously.
#30- what makes me an idiot for moving out of CH? Do you hear yourself??

  • Letitia James

People, City Council member Letitia James, who represents Crown Heights in the New York City Council, is the chairwoman of the Council’s Sanitation Committee. She has the power to change the rules to accommodate her constituency but she doesn’t. Why do we keep on re-electing her? It is time she knew we are going to stand up for ourselves.

  • shneur #8

i hope you guys are not all yelling at me! and there was another 8 who got removed or something
because i think the cop was an anti semitic douche bag, im just trying to save you 35 dollars or so because people were saying that its impossible to fight this

  • Farbisin

Why is it that societal rules are to be scoffed at and the most miniscule aspects of halacha adhered to? A rule is a rule. Stop whining. Either follow tha law or pay the consequences. Hypocrisy should not be tolerated regardless of race, religion, ethnic background.

  • Aviva

I have street cleaning 6 days a week- and I always manage to find a legal parking spot. It may be a long walk from my house, but that it the reality of living here. I personally have been blocked in by people double parking, and I feel it is a very selfish act.

  • come on

    The pt is:
-If double paring is allowed as a courtesy on all streets besides ones with schools or bus lanes, WELL if they want to take away the courtesy, they need to TELL us! Not ticket randomly! We are tax paying citizens of theis city, not targets for easy sity cash!
-Most neighborhoods have alternate side parking twice a week, why do we have it 4 times??? Is the street remotely cleaner after street cleaning???? No!!! They just push around some garbage, and keep the ppl employed and get the city the ticket $. So I agree with the poster who says LETITIA JAMES- we need to call her up and tell her what we think and vote accordingly! And our community council needs to get involved.

Message to ppl who live elsewhere: Whenever I have out of town guests, they are lovely ppl but they have a very hard time comprehending the alternate side rules, it’s not THAT complicated but you gotta live here to experience it. We can’t drive around for an hr each night to find a legal spot for the next day only to not Go ANYWHERE till alternate side is over at 12:30 or 1:30. Some of us have to do things like- go to work, go grocery shopping, live our lives…

To the ppl complaining about being blocked in: well first of all if I know I am going to need to get out during alternate side, I actually will move my car to be double parked so I don’t have this prob. And a better solution would be to require ppl leave a cell number if you need to have them move- hey they can ticket for that one- (but TELL ppl they will do it).

  • Helixflaw

I have just moved to Crown Heights from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. I don’t know if I can tolerate a lot of things about Brooklyn. One major issue that will eventually drive me out of this place will be the parking. I wish I could utilize public transportation and get rid of my car, but that is not an option with the nature of my career. I have no clue how people live here….I was, for the most part, forced into moving here temporarily….and when I leave, it will be like a scene from Shawshank Redeption when Andy Duphrane crawls to the end of that sewer pipe….because thats exactly what Brooklyn is, a big, expensive sewer pipe.

  • Nina

Well I got a ticket for just one minute alternate side is 11:30 to 1:00 can you believe this it’s like there officers cannot tell time, I was approaching my car to move it and I still got the ticket.its obvious the city is desperate for money need more to say its really disgusting and a shame on the things they will do.

  • saga

everyone should plea not guilty, and say they were in synagogue praying.!!!! That’s a sistem:(((

  • SakuraJew

Double parking can really mess things up. Legit parkers get stuck AND people who want to park immediately after street parking often cant because double parkers left their cars there past alt side timeframe.

    Stop crying noobs

  • Prince 007

You know something, everybody blames each other.
#1: Let’s make promises to ourselves that when ever we double park, we must leave our phone numbers on windshield.
#2: if you get ticket once a week just pay it.
    #3: Plz don’t start WW?
    Peace.
