Bochurim Arrested Shabbos, Walked Down Kingston in Cuffs

Handcuffs. Illustration Photo.

It was a very bizarre scene which unfolded on Kingston Avenue on Shabbos afternoon. As people were heading to Shul for Mincha, 4 Bochurim were being taken by police officers in handcuffs down Kingston and to the police station.

According to eye witnesses, the Bochurim were arrested because they did not have identification on them.

Sources in the precinct told CrownHeights.info that the Bochurim were arrested on the rooftop of a building on Kingston and Montgomery for holding an open container of alcohol. They were taken to the police station where they were issued criminal summonses for the violation, and released a short while later.

the only way for a cop to have seen them on a rooftop is if someone massered on them to the cop.
HOW!!! does a cop know what’s doing on a roof!?

  • wrong to state bochurim

    Please DO NOT SAY BOCHURIM
they were out of community teens cleanshaven Israelis or Russians ,not yeshivah kids

  • Totally disgusted woman unrelated to the

So where is our esteemed Fishel Brownstein now? Still in hiding? WHY ISN’T THERE A HELL OF A STINK OVER THIS???

Our “elected leaders”, cowardly scum that they are, need to stand up & SPEAK OUT about this outrage. No more “working quietly behind the scenes.” They do NOTHING!

4 guys on a roof enjoying a l’chaim the first nice Shabbos we’ve seen in 6 months. What were they doing…pouring booze on passers-by? Raining them with vodka bottles?

Meanwhile, how many cops did it take to do this? And why weren’t they out looking for elevator muggers, drunk drivers, drug dealers & other assorted variety criminils? Answer? Because it’s SAFER to arrest a few Jew-boys. THEY won’t kill the cops!

    What pure, unadalterated anti-semitism.

  • ch res

i dont think it makes a difference if they were bochrim or not or if they were wrong or not i want to know why we were targeted as opposed to people of “other race and color” who walk around smoking weed, drinking in public, acting lewdly and indecntly in public, driving motorbikes up and down one way streets, making noise at crazy times etc. are they being taken to the precint in cuffs, are they being getting ticketed and checked for id???

where are our leaders – our “al sharptons” why arent they asking these questions and causing a tumul??!!

  • Not messirah

This is not a time to blame this on Messirah.
I myself saw these guys on the rooftop – and I saw them from my bedroom window all the way on Carroll Street. So if I’m one person – and there are plenty of cops – that’s how the cops saw them. And they should’ve not been on the building rooftop drinking.

  • crown heights

i feel bad but the police got to do there job if they see it they do what they gotta do i mean you do the crime you pay the time obiviously it wasnt a big crime so they didnt pay alot of time

  • What-s Brownstein got to do with it?

There is no stink because it is against the law to have an exposed bottle of liquor in a public place. They did something against the law so they paid the price. It is a lesson for all of us to be more careful.

  • suprised

this man with a blackhat on is a bochur and where on shabbos would they carry identification? Doesn’t make sense. Made them drive on shabbos just to give a summons?

  • disgusted

you saw the media- cops have to make a certain quota of arrests… this fits their picture just fine thebooze only adds to it. but they can take anyone randomly too. and no id on them?- why that makes you a criminal?

  • private property???

is this the USA where cops can arrest people on private property ???

(okay, maybe it wasn’t their house but don’t the cops have real criminals to catch…)

  • nany

im very sorry to ch people but
pd in ch is not for safety its to see huw early in the month they can finish the work faster & evry end of month they need to aresste jew a member of the 71 pct

  • Appalled at the Comments

Notice that the photo is an “illustration photo,” not a photo of the people actually arrested in the story. Notice that the arrested people broke the law in a public place, not on private property. Notice that laws apply to Jews, to private property (you can’t murder on private property, for instance), and on Shabbos. Notice that Halakha requires us to follow the laws of the land where we live when they are not in violation — drinking in public is not Halakhically required or even acceptable except maybe on Purim. Notice that it’s easy to get worked up over a lot of rumor and little fact, and that many are willing to gossip and add their opinion of who must have done what without any information or fact. Notice that only one commenter saw the events, and seems to think it was right for the police to intervene. Notice that there is a lot of gossip here, which is not Halakhic to do.

  • to surprised

why dont you use your brains a little bit?? This picture obviously is not from this recent incident, its from file. Who would take a picture of this on shabbas??

  • ???

You’re all complaining that the cops should be doing something else, at least they are doing a bit of their job. If it was a non jew you would compliment the cops for doing their job.

  • Rooftop

It is illegal to be on the rooftop of a multi family building. There have been too many stories of people falling.

  • why ad masai yichi adananu........

what it is so wrong i agree with totaly dicusting woman unrelated wtvr dont they have didferent people to catch

  • disgusted again

Why weren’t they looking for the thugs who beat up that kid on Thursday? Too much trouble, I suppose. And who cares about a hurt Jewish kid?

This isn’t Williamsburg, people! THEY deal with these problems. The cops don’t get away with these stunts, because the Jewish community has REAL leadership.

  • CHI be more accurate

If CHI can’t publish the actual pictures then at least give a more acurate description of the arrests.

BTW any arab terrorists can dress up with a black hat and coat pass themselves off as Bochurim.

  • the police go looking for this

America iz nit andersh “anti semitism reigns the world over. Arresting a bochur for holding a beer bottle, what could be more fun???

  • smart

so many dumb comments.. being drunk on a rooftop can get you killed very fast may they learn a lesson

  • come on people!

in agreement with smart- look at “the police go looking for this” comment….

  • dignity

I appreciated this comment:. Notice that there is a lot of gossip here, which is not Halakhic to do.
lets find a way of maintaining our own dignity while searching for whats fair and finding out whats going on.

Better that they’re arrested and taught a lesson than left to get drunk and get hurt or possibly die from falling off the roof.

To “disgusted again” – You have to understand that when a crime takes place, it’s best to contact the authorities as soon as possible, to get as much evidence as possible. Running a few blocks away, calling a father then the police, the chances of finding the perpetrator go down. It is unfortunate the child did not have a cell phone.

If someone is struck with an open hand where there could be a fingerprint left on the skin, the police can lift that fingerprint off of the victim and match it in a database. But if these were young kids who probably don’t have any criminal history, it’s not going to happen.

Kids should be taught self-defense (which doesn’t always mean fighting back but rather to not make the situation worse and to protect one’s self) and how to respond to such situations.

Something needs to be organized soon. I will never forget the story of the young girl being attacked at the playground last summer and I hope she is okay.

somewhere in a mind full of images of religion, chasiddism, fedora’s, pinstripe suits, movies, newspapers, high heels, watches and diamonds there is an evaluator that requires information and instruction the daled amos of halacha, the law of the reigning powers, the law of the land, the aspirations, goals and values of individuals and friendship circles and have to be outlined clearly and understandably
    enough to prevent recidivism
friends don’t tell friends “ it is a free country ” when the reality is there are morelaws and regulations than ever
friends tell friends the truth and share good advice
a neighborhood with a long history isn’t disneyland

  • This is nonsense

You cannot get arrested for not carrying ID, this is not the Soviet Union. You can get arrested for committing a crime, but how is drinking alcohol on your own property a crime? Who let the cops in the house in the first place? Did they have a warrant?

  • yosroel shemtov - we need you

The guys were not dressed at all shabbosdik
Red athletic sleevless undershirt, no white shabbos shirt
two other guys also without shabbos dress ,not shomer shabbos , clean shaven bums , when they go after your girls , what will you say ? when aguy is drunk and gets pushed off the roof .
visit the hangout and you will see what yisroel shemtov was fighting for all his life , Get out of the Rebbes shchuna if you are bumming around, go back to your neighborhood

  • Anonymous

Arresting someone for something that would have otherwise been ignored because they didn’t have id on them when a religious jew clearly cannot carry id on him on the Sabbath is a violation of religious freedom. These cops don’t care because they know we don’t have an Al sharpton who would tear thenm to pieces had this type of thing happened to someone in the black community.

  • ???

I live in Blackville and I see on a daily basis how these people live. Consuming alcohol in public is a joke in comparison to what goes on here…and you’ll NEVER see cops handcuffing…

  • concerned mesivta parent

how about how we can all have access to an open beer bar party just for showing up at a party friday night all in the name of having a sholom zocher. beer being consumed on a front porch of a private home, that they obviously provided with ice buckets and all, for all the innocent underaged children to be exposed to. this is ok. this is more of an outrage and more illegal than the older guys hanging out on a rooftop with open bottles. if anything should be massered on it should be this. not all fathers can take their older boys to their teacher’s simchas, but they should. this is all in the name of being chassidish and cool – nebech

  • basics (alt) [you cant stop yg {m}]

all the comments are very nice yes cops should’ve be looking 4 others doing worst things, (i dont know whether or not)the cops had the right to go up and arrest ppl on private property.. but the main concern should be chilul hashem. we are left just yelling about this pathetic accurance.. wen everyone should be (and m’stameh will)taking a lesson from this, dont make a chilul hashem! be careful! give a hoot! EVEN IF it was allowed theres no reason to act foolish in public or in private or in any city for that matter al achas comeh vi’comeh the the rebbe’s neiborhood.

  • Berkle

It would be an outrage if Brownstein complained or Spelin went to the Mayor. Drunks are drunks and they should be arrested. And nothing to do with mossering. Loobavitchers should not think they are above the law or should operate outside normal society.

  • One arrested

Okay so I’m one of the guys arrested! The first thing we did not drink and we sat and talked one small bottle of beer and no one was drunk and how marked if one policeman arrived and the second officer Jews was not Jewish Jewish officer did all the mess! It was noon because we got up from sleep is fine if Bigdi changed when they stopped us Spoke to us very badly maintained and racism are racists explicit! We boys first time we Ltd.

  • scionofzion

at first I was outraged: arrested for not carrying ID? Since when is a rooftop of a residential bldg public? But smart had the best point of all, I think. Teens drunk on a rooftop is a horrible accident waiting to happen, Rachmanu L’tzlan. Taking a nice, escorted walk down Kingston Ave beats being airborne for about 5 seconds.

  • Meyer Lansky

You people are something else… how is it when the police do their job, you criticize them? They should not be on the rooftop drinking… we have had robberies and burglaries in the neighborhood, so these are all preventative measures. Read about the “Broken Glass” theory. When you allow “small” things like this to happen, then it only encourages bigger problems to start happening. I am glad to have the police in our neighborhood… look in other areas where there is no police presence… trust me, it’s not pretty.

Many people, mostly but not all, minority,
on a regular basis, get arrested, for
carrying an open container of alcohol,
being on a roof, not carrying identification.
Check in your criminal courts of each borough,
    ask the District Attorney.
    These are common everyday arrests.
