Police on a Purim Ticket Blitz

CROWN HEIGHTS, Brooklyn [CHI] — Despite ‘reports’ that police promised to ‘ease up’ on Purim, many Crown Heights residents couldn’t help but notice the very opposite. White NYPD cars were out on the avenues and streets pulling over motorists on the Jewish holiday.

“It is so typical for this to happen in our neighborhood. It is sad,” said one Montgomery Street resident, while watching police pull over a Jewish motorist. “This is the third or fourth I have seen today.”

This year’s Purim blitz reminded neighborhood residents of a similar incident that happened a number of years ago, where police ticketed numerous vehicles in Crown Heights on Purim day, leading to a public outcry. Unwilling to stand by as countless community members were being ticketed relentlessly, Shomrim Coordinator Isaac Zellermaier OBM made phone calls to police and city contacts, which thankfully ended the blitz.

At a precinct council meeting following that blitz, police apologized to the community, saying it was an innocent misunderstanding.

“Can we expect any better? Our community leadership is running to give awards to this police department, and the police are laughing in our face,” concluded one source familiar with community politics.

My car was parked in a temporary no parking zone in front of oholie tora on purim morning and I did not not get a ticket

The Crown Heights Mesira Council held an awards ceremony Tuesday December 16, at which awards were presented to Police commanders and community affairs officers at the 71st Precinct. These same Mossrim (Chanina Sperlin, Dov Hikind and the whole bounce) tried to use the police to shut down Shomrim. When that failed, these same Mossrim, orchestrated a viscous Mesira/blood libel against the Shomrim. Now famously known as the Shomrim Six case. Another of many Mesiras that failed, thank g-d.

They’re probably being pushed by another faction of the community that is jealous that we don’t do the real crime, so in some distorted way, this makes them feel good.
it doesnt give them happiness in the end.

The police in our neighborhood are out of control.
on Kingston ave an ATM machine is broken and
no police in site. But on Purim what are thy doing ?
ticketing ! Who is at fault? Us the little people.
We are being harassed by this 71 pct for years and all we do is elect
morans to help them harass us .
    Who is representing us ?
chanina ? Did he graduate from high school yet ? NO he did not .
Poltrack has his own business I hop . fishel brownstein ? He is excused .
maybe the cadaner guy can do something but he is busy printing the playboy.

  • get rid of the Vaad Hakahal NOW!

Obviously, Isaac OBM will be missed in more ways than one.

Where is the MIA Fishel Brownstein? His picture at that recent idiotfest AKA Town Hall Meeting shocked me. I thought he’d disappeared. Unless it was a lifesize puppet.

    Oh wait! It is.

I’m sure there were plenty of people from the community that were driving their kids around “under the influence.” Not safe. And they should be pulled over. Tickets for double parking? Stupid. But driving drunk… Not cool!

kaan tziva hashem es habracha- isnt this where everything shoud be blessed – and it is we just need emunah and we need to be able to understand that everything is for the good. that is not to say that all this was right.. it must get fixed… but doesnt simcha break boundries.. i wasnt so sure about the pessimism…

  • Fight the tickets!

They fail to catch muggers and theievs.

Instead they ticket innocent yidden driving around on purim!! Do they even know WHY they give out tickets?

Its important to FIGHT these tickets – so that on record its seen what a failure the department is.

If you pay these bogus tickets – youl just get more!!

  • Fairness Counts

They are doing their jobs – public intoxication is a problem on Purim, and they are watching out for the community at large, not just Jews.

  • TO; thankfull, 3rd comment

THATS BECAUSE Oholei Torah IS ON THE 77 side. THEY ARE VERY NICE COPS! THANK GOD

  • Eli

Why does one have to turn to the Satmar news hotline to find out
that less than 2 hours ago, 2 women of OUR shechuna were violently mugged ON KINGSTON AVE??

  • Shmuel

There should be a community meeting with Eli Slavin so he can write a federal law for the Congress lady clarke who likes the arabs. She can do her teshuva by banning Purim parking tickets.

  • ch res

sorry to rain on your parade but i drove around yesterday for about 3 – 4 hours and didnt see one cop car or cop stopping anyone and the streets were crazy trust me they gave us a break this year as opposed to some years where i saw them in action blitzing us with tickets, this year i actually saw two non jews pulled over on utica ave and anyone double parked or pulled over in the shchuna seemed safe – give them a break and a pat on the back once in a while!!

  • A better way?

Nu? You mean all our clever CH Jews cant think of a better way of distributing Mishlo’ach Manot without blocking our already narrow streets with a thousand cars and vans?

There has to be a better way!

  • votes

If our community council is not advocating for us, maybe we need to do things differently. And think twice when you get a call from the community council asking to endorse democrats in the primaries so we have leverage- look how well that strategy is working. We need to vote for ppl who are going to get the job done, period. (BTW did the community council endore the lovely two faced anti-semetic Yvette Clark?)
We definitey need some type of new political action commitee…

  • happy camper

My experience completely differs from that which the article describes. For many hours, I was driving around CH. My car was double parked numorous times. I didn’t receive any tickets, and neither did I see any cops giving tickets.

  • CH DAD

baloney you above about lax in tickets on Purim..I witnessed later in the day on carrol street between troy-schendtady (shemtovs side) 4 african american cops from 71 – yup FOUR, yup from 71 yes blacks ans YES I tried to intervene. They were giving a parked car a ticket for sticking out! Yes there was snow sheeees! I asked arent we having a little leniency today?? They all answered NO! Who said that?!!

Shame, I was dishaertened and walked away!

  • gods right hand man

most likely protecting people from themselves as dui isnt good for anyone
    someone somewhere pays the price
    dont let it be you

  • WE ASOLUTELY NEED TO BE HEARD!

I live on ‘the other side of Eastern Parkway’, wehere our lovely African American neighbors double park 24/7, often obstucting ambulances – flashing lights, wailing sirens and all. They’re often sitting in their cars, obstucting TWO LANES of traffic, talking and laughing…apparantly ‘totally oblivious’ to the emengency vehicles! And all this without penalty! So those of you who think the 77th precinct is any better, you’re sadly mistaken.
However, having lived under the 71st for a good many years, I’m quite sure they are the most anti-semitic Precinct in the US!
WE ASOLUTELY NEED TO BE HEARD! AND CRIME MUST BE BROUGHT DOWN!MAYOR GIULIANI …WE MISS YOU!

  • Crown Heightser

sorry, but I drove around yesterday for about 3 hours and didn’t see one cop car, or cop stopping anyone. The streets were crazy. They gave us a break this year as opposed to some years where I saw them in action blitzing us with tickets. I’m not a big fan of the 71 but, give them a break, I feel they deserve a thank you.

You break the law, you get fined. Thats it. No special treatment for no one, or race, or religion. The end.

  • Get real, people!

So let’s all THANK our wonderful 71st Precinct for their incredible love of Jews…If some people weren’t ticketed, obviously those who were must be making it all up! Get real, people! They are antisemitic, they don’t protect our innocent civilians, in numerous cases, they haven’t even made Police reports. I myself, walked into the 71st on 3 different occasions to file a report. The response? “We don’t report things like that!” Huh? My taxes pay towards your salary! Next time I’ll paint my face black before I walk in…maybe I’ll be heard…
