Moshe Rubashkin Sentenced to 16 Months Prison and $450,000 in Fines and Restitutions
ALLENTOWN, PA [CHI] — Court reconvened this morning in Allentown, Pennsylvania and the judge handed down his verdict. Reb Moshe was sentenced to 16 months in prison with the possibility of parole after a third of that, along with a fine of $450,000.
Once again many Crown Heightsers turned out in show of support, a bus and many private cars showed up, all leaving as early as 6:30 in the morning.
The fine broke down as follows (approximate); $437,000 to United States Treasury, $52,000 to the City of Allentown and another $7,500 to the Fed.
At the proceedings the detention center that Reb Moshe will be confined to was referred to as a ‘camp’, which according to a source familiar with such cases said that it meant its less then minimum security white collar prison.
We were further informed that the defense can appeal the judgment, but does not intend to. Reb Moshe is requited to turn himself in for the jail term on January 6th 2009.
In a phone conversation with CrownHeights.info Reb Moshe said “me and my family would like to thank all those that Davened for me and showed support, it had a major positive affect on the case.”
SIMCHA
Oh My Gosh. This is terrible. I’m sure Defense will appeal this to just house arrest. Moishe is not a threat publicly. Hashem, work some miracles here!!!!!!!!!!!
help us
Aibishter!!! how can this happen??
Broken hearted
Reb Moishe, my eyes are red, my cheeks are drenched and my stomach is sick and acidy from pain, over the obvious gezeira that has overcome our community. Had I been the Korban, I could say that Hashem knows what’s best for me, but Moishe? The Rubashkins? The entire community? That’s a little to much.
My dear friends and members of the extended lubavitch/Rubashkin family, let’s get together and be mareesh oilamois that Hashem should remove this terrible gezeira from us.
Let’s sum it up.
Who will be there for the widows and orphans of our community every erev yomtov with new suits and shoes?
Who will be there for all the yungelait who have their utilities disconnected and need an immediate $1-4000.00 cash?
Who will open their home for 1-200 guests on Tishrei serving them 3 meals a day?
Who will be there for the 1-200 girls who have been benefitting from nightly Nightlife over the last few years?
Who will see to it that the community gets the most beautiful newspaper every week to educate and keep together the entire community with history of Crown heights and beautiful divrei torah?
Who will pay the rabbonim (yes, ALL Rabbonim) every week?
Who will pay the past due grocery bills of hundreds of families?
Who will care when hundreds of families will no longer afford a piece of meat or chicken?
Who will care when hundreds of children will roam the streets during the summer months because their parents can’t afford to pay for camp?
Who will care if the newly subsidized renovated swimming pool and gym that several hundred children and adults enjoy, will no longer be there for them?
And who will care if Machlokes returns to town in its ugliest form?
We are all victims. Does anybody realize?
Moishe in jail. Obama our president. Agri out of business. Rabbonim relegated to history. Machlokes rats out of the abyss. Dozens of homes in foreclosure. many dozens losing their jobs. Hundreds losing their life savings. Where are we heading?
Who cares?
G-d why are you doing this to us?
This is the ultimate Kelala: Ain Lanu Lhishoein Ela Al Avinu Shebashamayim. (Sota, 49).
G-d will ultimately come through. But we must urge him on and do teshuvah.
Vehu Yigaleinu.
Can-t be
Broken Hearted:
You forgot the most important…who will care for his wonderful family and help them deal with this terrible gizera???

When one looks at the big picture – what’s happening to the Rubashkin family, in Postville and Crown heights, one cannot conclude but that this is all l’mala miderech hatevah.
To see a family get hit so badly, in so many ways, all at one time, is clearly a gzerah min hashomayim.
No one can guess why this is happening, but it clearly is not normal!
Since chassidim are one mishpocha, it effects all of us.
We all need to do some serious soul searching, but if we can’t find anythin…
Pishpesh v’lo motzah, if after soul searching one cannot find the “cause”, then Chazal tell us it must be due to Bitul Torah, which in our case, the bitul among the soldiers of Torah – the yeshivah bochurim, who are Torasom Umnasam, yet they waste away their “best” years after shlichus and smicha till kollel without any proper program in learning.
I’m not here to preach, but to point out the obvious – we are being told a message. It’s loud and clear. But we don’t understand it.
DaasH
i heard that the judge and prosecutors had printouts from a certain Lubavitcher’s hate blog who kept on posting anti rubashkin lies.
shame on you DH
who cares
to kop doctor
you finally found the culprits, the yeshiva bochurim. maybe the tznius of the married women in ch? maybe the lack of ahavas yisroel in ch? maybe the yungeleit who trim their beards in ch? and th list is long. ask someone to relate to you a story with the ruzhiner rebbe regarding the last posuk of kapital 119 in thillim.
AD MOSAI?!?!
hey kop doktar – when you are hit hard you are supposed to say “look deeper, there’s a reason….” oif yenem’s cheshbon HOW DARE you justify?!?! All we need is to skip that whole post & cry AD MOSAI?!?!?!?!? Yes, the Rubashkin family has been hit – way too hard – there is NO EXCUSE! WE NEED MOSHIACH NOW! Go daven for them!
Reuven
What does this mean for the poor families of Crown Heights? What will happen to the Crown Heights Jewish Community Council, where payrolls are barely met, grants are barely renewed or lost, and the leadership vacant ever since Moshe pled guilty?
Will Rabbi Osdoba step in and order new elections? WIll Chanina Sperlin move to take over with Leibish Nash? Will Harvey Lang step aside? Will a new group be formed to replace the void?
Will the Rabbe’s Daled Amos ever return to it’s rightful place in city politics? Ad mosai.
Nat
For a silver lining… Please be aware that many are not so lucky to be in the ‘camp’. Whatever collar.
As they say, …. mit chasodim..
AD MOSAI????????
We need moshiach NOWW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I once organized a shabbaton, and the we were suppose to stay by Yossi Rubashkin, down the block. The teens took a taxi from Manhattan, and they said they are going to Rubshakin on President St., the taxi assured them that he knew the address, so they did not even offer the taxi driver the directions or the address.
The taxi then took them to Moshe Rubashkin, they were a whole bunch , Moshe greeted them, as if they were expected and spent 2 hours with them. They then asked him, where I was,and he said he had no idea.
They finally realized that I was waiting for them by his brother. He did not even expect the guests, and he treated them so nicely.
I did over 6 shabatons at Reb Moshe, and we had approx. 40-50 guests, and he opened his home, gave me the key, and he hardly knew me. May Hashem make an open miracel happen.

“What does this mean for the poor families of Crown Heights?”
How about the other wealthy families or the Kingston Ave stores that we support with our money stepping up to the plate?

I don’t live in CH and was not previously aware of the enormous amount that Reb Moshe has personally done to sustain the needs of the community. There is so much pain being felt by all, it comes out clearly in the comments. Hashem should bring comfort to the Rubashkin family and to all the hurting souls. There will be better times ahead, b’ezras Hashem. This is a family of unique strength and they will get through it with the support of the community.
davening for the best
Whenever tragedy strikes, the people affected try to see what they can do to improve and I am sure that every effort will be made to seek improvement in the community. Besides efforts made to bring Moshiach should be efforts to ensure an the earliest possible parole. Obviously a community that is so hard hit financially will have to develop a plan to stay afloat.
Old time CH resident
Abe, you are either very young or very naive. The CHJCC has been around for over 40 years and NEVER during all these years, no matter who was in charge, were any of the services enumerated here provided.
From the rabbonim NEVER being paid on time (if at all), to nobody caring about widows and orphans (except CSSY) to the volume of camp scholarships given to hundreds of children with honor and dignity, or anybody caring to make the gym available and subsidized and fixed up. Nor did anybody dream of setting up a Nightlife program for the hundreds of single girls in the neighborhood or produce a newspaper that is full of real good content week after week.
Just watch all these things disappear. Not Chanina or Leibish Nash are capable of stepping up to the plate. They couldn’t even pay Rabbi Schwei his salary. And their camp scholarships went only to those who wanted to send their kids to Spritzers camp. Besides for politics they have no other agenda.
I hope to be proven wrong.

I am sick at the thought of what is happening to Moshe Rubashkin. May Hashem give him the strength to overcome this and come out better and stronger than ever before. I too, was personally helped this Tishrei and last year Tishrei with large sums of money by Moshe Rubashkin in a very discreet way. and I can see from the posts that I am but one of so many who were helped by Moshe Rubashkin. Moshe, may the tfilos of rabim be on your side to hasten your redemption and you should have a geula protis and geula klolis bimheira! The Rebbe is with you wherever you are.

I think that the wickedness of the haters has broken all limits.
This morning I was told by one of the yungelait who spent two days in court saying Tehilim in support of Moshe Rubashkin, that he was harassed by one of the haters and supporters of the other “rav” for going to the court. He called him all kinds of names and accused him of being a traitor and a sick man.
I am talking of someone who is over 40 years old and is even a relative of the Rubashkin family. And many members of his immediate family went to court as well. Still his hate and anger towards another jew overtakes all natural tendencies of a normal human being, to spew venom and hate without any limitations of yidishkeit and humanity. All in the name of kovod horabonim…. with the rav’s approval.
And while on this note, lets point out, that while all the chabad websites were reporting on this tragedy and were trying to urge on all anash to say tehilim and show support for the Rubashkins, one website, namely “chabad.info” did not mention with one word the entire episode. Not before to say tehilim, and not after to show some sympathy. I wonder why?
We do know chabad.info’s associations in the politics of Crown Heights. And they do lay a claim to being the champions of bringing moshiach closer. I wonder how?
My dear friends, if we don’t wake up an d put a stop to this hate, Obama will be just a minor spider-web on the wall.
SHOLOM
SAD SITUATION, WE DON,T KNOW HASHEM,S REASONING,
HOWEVER THE REBBE SAID IN A SICHA HOW EVERTHING IN MOSDOS , BUISNESS, ETC SHOULD BE ACCORDING TO THE LAW OF THE LAND IE DINA DIMALCHUSA DINA (AT LEAST BIDEENAY MOMANOS) IF THIS WAS DONE THEY RUBASHKIN WOULD NOT BE WERE THEY ARE TODAY.

It seems everyone knows where to point the finger. That’s not my forte so I’ll just contribute a practical point. Everyone, including the judge and jury, knows that Rubashkin is not a public threat. The U.S. prison system is overpopulated and the majority of prisoners are non-violent criminals. We pay for the authority’s resources, most of which are being wasted on people like Rubashkin, and not on the real violent and dangerous criminals (a lot of them can be found right here in CH.)
I’m making this point because we all know the Rubashkin family and hardly need to remind eachother what wonderful good people they are.
In Mass. A certain amount of once illegal substance has now been legitimized. I am not arguing on behalf of legalizing drugs Chos V’Shalom but it goes to show how sick and tired citizens are of watching their tax dollars being wasted on non-violent criminals. G-d bless the whole kehillah.
