A Police Officer with Nothing Better to do at 2:50am?

CROWN HEIGHTS, Brooklyn [CHI] — Take a look at the license plate in the picture above, do you see anything wrong with it? Police Officer Vargas did. The officer was posted on Kingston Avenue and Carroll Street during the midnight shift when he issued a ticket to a parked car for an “improperly displayed license plate” at 2:50am.

Crown Heights has lately seen a massive influx of police officers in the neighborhood who are seen ‘walking the beat’ and keeping us safe. One of the side effects of this is the increased ticketing of vehicles, something which we have come to accept as a price for our protection.

More in the Extended Article.

But tickets like these get residents mad, one car owner told CrownHeights.info ‘I got a ticket for a “mutilated registration sticker” when all that was wrong was that the sticker came off so I taped it back on’ he added “do I deserve a ticket for that? It’s not like I blocked a fire hydrant or double parked”.

Another resident asked “I wonder if he [Officer Vargas] was watching the streets when he went scouting for some stupid tickets to write”, “this is abuse, plain and simple” added another resident, the very same sentiment was echoed by everyone that passed.

i live on that block too and i got a ticket for “missing vin number”…ever heard of having a registration sticker without a vin number??? the vin number was clearly there…. these cops are looking to write tickets its ridiculous!!!

  • I know

Huh, not 10 minutes ago, I saw a cop on my block circling a car several times, including looking at the license plates, trunk, inspection etc. He was just dying to find something to write a ticket, but he couldn’t. He walked away defeated. I smiled.

  • but we-re safer...

The price to pay for rookie heightened patrols…. I saw 4 cops in 2 separate places in Crown Heights last night walking up and down the streets looking for expired registration/inspection stickers…

  • To the person who got the ticket

If you get the plate fixed then take a picture you wont have to pay. It happened to me many times. My plate kept falling off or kept getting loose.

  • chaim greenstein

I got a ticket from officer vargas also last week because he couldnt see my whole vin number!!!

  • Rochel

i thought i was the only one, i also live on that block i got a 65 dollar ticket for improperly displayed license plate, when both plates are perfectly normal. then about 3 minutes later that same officer issued another 65 doillar ticket for a missing inspection sticker. HELPPPPPP.
they are looking for things to ticket, and these yukols know that it takes to much to fight against a ticket,, that it takes too much time, energy and it;s your word against theirs.
we must do something about it NOW,someone needs to go after them

To the ‘Fed up with cops’. In all fairness, while I totally agree that the cops (read New York City’s Department of Finance) are out there to squeeze every last penny out of our pockets, the ticket you got for “missing vin number” was issued to your car because by law, the physical VIN number affixed by the car manufacturer onto lower portion of the dashboard on the driver’s side must be visible at all times. The logic is, VIN displayed on the registration sticker must match the one on dashboard to prevent fraud. Sorry though, for you having to pay the fine and, yes, cops/city should not act like voulchers.

  • Hay cool

hay i just got a ticket today, but the dumb cop wrote the wrong street on it how do i fight it? like what is my claim?

  • cher

It’s definitely worth fighting it. Firstly, the officers have to shlep to court, especially if you switch the first date they give you. Chances are, the officer might not show up, and youre off the hook. Even if he shows up, at least youre giving him an extra tircha. Secondly, i’ve had a case where the officer gave me a ticket for wearing the seatbelt under my arm – improper use of seatbelt. The judge said there is no such rule anymore. If everyone fights their tickets, maybe they’ll stop. It’s even worth it to get a lawyer to help you out. You’ll have to pay, but at least your fighting. and the police are usually scared of the lawyers, so let them shvitz enough times, and maybe they'[ll stop ticketing.

i got a ticket when parked on kingston bet union and pres and i had money in the meter and the cop wrote i had parked by a failed meter too long – i saw two patrolling cops and showed them they said they werent traffic cops and it wasnt their problem, i even saw a traffic cop who was giving out tickets like mine to other people at the time and checked her badge and saw it wasnt her but when i asked her about it she said it was her friend and she left already…. go fight in court for 35 dollars!!! really upsetting

  • logic

they make us pay for the security in the neighborhood by ticketing everything possible… it actually might be cheaper and more effective to higher a private security company…

  • boruch

Hey I got not once but twice a ticket by bored cops for, wait for this…“mutilated sticker” The sticker is so slightly nicked you almost need a magnifine glass…it has been like this for 8 months. I guess thats the orders from the top???

  • a mad crown heightser

    ah mishugoyim
they have nothing better to do in their lives then rite tickets for absolutely no reason….gimee a break!

  • eli

I got a ticket for blocking crosswalk when I wasn’t . You gotta be very careful how you park your car. Some cops look for every opportunity to write a ticket.
It’s great that finally their presence in visible, the only problem that they don’t know what to do and I guess keep themselves busy writing tickets.

I wonder maybe they have to get certain amount of tickets for their bosses or to get some bonuses.

They say: there is no good, without bad…

  • ZALMEN G

WHEN EVER YOU GET A UNFAIR TICKET CALL 311 AND FILE A COMPLAINT AGAINST THAT OFFICER. MAKE SURE YOU GET A RECIPT OF THE COMPLAINT. FOLLOW UP, CALL 311 AGAIN AND LET THEM KNOW YOU ARE FOLLOWING THROUGH. LET THE POLICE STATION KNOW YOU FILED A REPORT. IF THERE IS ENOUGH REPORTS SOMETHING WILL BE DONE.

  • no longer in ch

how do you think the city verifies that the cops are actually out on the job and not sitting in a donut shop somewhere? two words. ticket quotas.

  • sh

We have nothing going for us in this Jungle/Zoo dealing with the animals living in the area and the money hungry cops. lets get up and move away.

  • Get them

We should get together and sue for discrimination. I would like the cops to provide proof that such tickets where given any where else besides CH. Of course if we could find a board lawyer in CH we may even have a criminal case and put the cop away for a day or two. But we need to get all the ticket together. Where is the JLC?

  • stay cool

    To hay cool
u might want to try this: go to the address on the ticket. Its possible that the house number does not exist (house numbers skipped) or if it does exist it could be within 15 feet of a hydrant within a bus stop, etc. (then if this was the address why was not a hydrant or bus stop ticket written). Take several pictures which include street signs and the street address or look up city block and lot numbers showing that this house number does not exist

And we all thought by vega going it would be easier, the new shmuck that came and took over from vega is much worse, its all since he came into power, all he knows to do is ticket the jews, and cause problems for the community, look at the guy that got arrested on friday, people had to work extra hard to get him out for shabbos because the shmuck is just after the jews, why don’t we see them in the non jewish area ticketing

  • Yosef

WOW I cant belive this I got the Same ticket, for the exact same thing.!!!

    Any Advice I can do?.

  • PULEEZ

I understand everyones frustration but having a bunch of tickets after begging and screaming for Police presence and protection seems a small price to pay.Would you be more upset about getting a ticket you maybe wouldnt have otherwise gotten or would you be more upset about getting that car’s windows smashed in to take the $3.56 thats in your glovebox tzedakah box. Or would you rather Chas V’sholom get mugged. I dont understand. Yes I understand everyones frustration but I think this is what comes from having a large probably bored police presence in CH. Try to fight your tickets but please dont start up with these cops or call them names, their primary purpose for being in CH is to protect us.

Well Missing improperly displayed licenses plate could be for any reason. Any type of plate covered. If the words NEW YORK is covered even just a little it could be a summons, Clear plastic covers as well in NYC you cannot have. As for the VIN numbers if there are any papers on your dash board that covers your VIN number thats a summons as well. As for Hay cool you say he is a “dumb cop” maybe he wrote the summons and made the mistake on purpose so you wouldn’t have to pay the fine..Instead of calling him names, find him and say thank you. Here in CH we have to protect ourselves dot our I’s and cross our T’s lets not double park, park in bus stops. there is no reason for getting summons when those are things we do all the time and get away with.

  • to hay cool:

is there such a street in crown heights area, like i got a ticket for union ave, and i fought it and won, i send them maps of crown heights, saying there is no such thing as union ave,
and it was dismissed. always check to see if something is wrong on ticket like missing regestration date, that happens alot for out of state lics. plates. they are can be dismissed. it never hurts to write a letter, bec they can lessen the charge etc.

  • crown heights

I have a shared driveway and someone park on the street and got a ticket outside my house for blocking a driveway when he maybe 1 inch into the driveway.

  • ex ch-r

the fact is that crownheights is costing the city alot of money.

this is how theyre covring their expenses plain and simple.

ch.info: keep on posting and something will get done about it sooner or later. thanks
    god bless the internet

  • driver

My daughter kindly got a ticket while driving my car. I wouldn’t have known except I have a personalized plate & the cop wrote I instead if 1 (the #.) So it was dismissed. Check every ticket for accurate details & if there’s anything wrong it gets invalidated.

Other than that, you can either fight or pay. For such stupid reasons I’d fight every time! I examined my car for “violations” very carefully today.

  • 770

Last night I saw on Albany Ave & on Carroll St, cops instead of patrolling giving out tickets to cars, those cops don’t care about our safety, they care about giving tickets to innocent people more.

  • CN

I rent a garage to park in. Sorry to read about all of the troubles people are having by parking on the street, but at least you all made me feel better that my money is well spent on the garage.

  • haha

Stop blaming the NYPD, they don’t make laws, they enforce the law. if there is no such violation, they can’t enforce it. blame the law maker.

  • SUPERMAN

STOP BEING CRY BABIES BECAUSE WHEN SOMETHING HAPPENS YOUR THE FIRST ONE TO CALL THE COPS THESE GUYS WALK AROUND ALL DAY AND GET PAID NOTHING TO RISK THERE LIVES TO MAKE THE CITY THE SAFEST CITY IN THE US AND ALL YOU ARE CRYING ABOUT SUMMONSES GROM UP

  • Fight it

For all those who claim to have gotten a ticket for what amounts to “no reason”, what do you hope to accomplish by kvetching about on this site?

If you really don’t deserve the ticket, go fight it and you’ll get it thrown out.

  • great ideas lol

i have an idea to keep these cops busy: stage fake crimes and fake fights. Also, give them brain games, or go and joke with them
    :-D

  • BP yid

Stop KVETCHING! omg u sound like a buntch of spoiled brat, Vegas Shmegas, fight the ticket and stop complaining, ur license plate is falling off that is what is wrong with it, Vegas happen to be a bit machmir on these things so what?
Ungratitude is what it is, you see more cops in the streets and you complain-not to the court where u should be complainig- but to the news, ok so now what? feel better?

  • WE DESERVE IT

I GOT A TICKET FOR BEING PARKED IN FRONT OF THE LUBAVITCHER YESHIVAH ON FRIDAY AFTERNOON AT 6:00 P.M. WHEN THERE IS NEVER EVER SCHOOL. BUT I MUST SAY WE DESERVE IT IF WE DON’T GET TOGETHER AND FILE SOME SORT OF A PETITION FOR PROPER POLICING AND NOT HARRASMENT.

  • ticket for riding bike on sidewalk

i was riding my bike tonight on albany and president, and the black cop stationed on the corner (OFFICER BURTON), stopped me and informed me that it is illegal to ride on the sidewalk, and gave me a ticket.
has anybody else ever gotten a ticket for this?

  • QUALITY OF LIFE -- ticket the blockers!

    B“H
    To ”Crown Heights Wrote“ —

I wish the police would ticket all the cars that park in front of our garage!

Whenever we call the police or 311 to ask that the blocker cars get ticketed, it usually takes at least 6 hours for anyone to get around to coming and ticketing the car. I understand why; it’s low priority compared to a mugging or a drug bust, c”v“.

(Often, by the time the police come, the drivers of the blocker cars have left, but the damage has been done by their blocking).

By NYC law, only once the car has been ticketed, can you call a towtruck to tow away the car. In four years, I’ve only succeeded ONE time at getting a car ticketed in anything like a timely manner. (I think it only took 2 hours for the police to come and ticket.)

The car’s owner was foolish enough to leave the car there so long that I did call a tow truck, which arrived just as the car owner did, so even then, the car did not get towed.

Think of yourself as LUCKY, that you never have to worry about being parked-in to your own garage!

Those inconsiderate people have no right to do that, one inch or one car length, as far as I’m concerned! Besides, have you ever heard the expression, ”Give them an inch, and they’ll take a yard!“ It sure is true with those driveway blockers and garage blockers!

If you have not had to deal with this over and over again, you have no way of understanding how crazy this whole problem can be. Believe me, we’ve got ”No parking” signs on the garage door, and yellow lines on the curb. The only explanation for these blockers is their laziness or selfishness. [These blockers generally do NOT have handicapped plates or permits, which WOULD be a valid excuse, come to think about it.]

  • Yitz

i got a ticket for bird poop on my windshield.the officer said it was blocking the registration sticker.

I need the services of Jimmy Justice !

  • crownheights reseident

To one who is complaining about driveways and garages i do agree with you.

One Tuseday morning i come out of my house and my car was park in my driveway and i had appointment to go to and i could not get out.
I called the police to come and give this car a ticket 10 hours later they came and when i called the police to find out when they are commining to give the car a ticket they kept on saying we are to bussy for that we have other thing to take care of. When they did show up the did give the car a ticket
Now i had to find a tow truck to take the car FINALY THE DUMB WOMAN came back.
when we were upset she said i did not realize that is a driveway where i come from it dose not look like a driveway i was MAD b/c i missed my appointment.

The point was she had to take the train and proberly was late could not rebotherd finding parking so she just left the car and left.

How DUMB could a person be seeing that there was a car in a driveway.

I realy feel for you so now we Only park in the street which is not fare B/c we get blocked in the whole time

  • chutzpa!!!

I got a ticket at 1:00 am for parking “12 feet
‘ from a hydrant I measured it with a tape measure….15ft 2 inches! two inches more than necessary!!!!!

  • Dina

I also got a false ticket two weeks ago. I actually thought it was an innocent mistake of the police officer but now I understand that it was not. He wrote I was parked over a white line when the white line was only for moving vehicles and ended before the parking zone, and there was another white line for the walkway. Well you can bet I took pictures and I hope to get it waived.

  • BIKE ON SIDEWALK

BEWARE: the cops will give you a ticket if they see you on a bike on the sidewalk.

  • zzl853

just file iab on this copes and let iab investigate thier condact .

the diffrent between a criminal and a cop is ……………. the BEDGE

  • you sound like a bunch of democrats

this is the dumbest thing I have ever read. Either follow the law or shut up and pay the tickets.
