CROWN HEIGHTS, Brooklyn [CHI] — The final Precinct Council Meeting before the summer took place this past Thursday, June 19th with a weak turnout in contrast to past meetings where many Jewish residents turned out to show concern with the crime in Crown Heights.

The meeting opened with greetings from Mr. C. Karl Cohen, President of the Council and after reading the budget report Mr. Cohen introduced Yosef Abramson, a student in the Darchai Menachem school, who had just won the ‘71st Precinct Frank Vega’ award for an assay he composed in a citywide competition where participants wrote essays entitled ‘If I were Police Commissioner for a day…’. Yosef addressed the crowd and read a part of the essay, drawing applause from the crowd, “if only Yosef were really the commanding officer of the 71st alone for a day…” added D.I. Frank Vega, drawing more applause.

Given the heat and the fact that the auditorium had no air conditioning, along with the elections that were to take place for the executive board of the Precinct Council, things moved along really quick.

Inspector Vega gave a brief overview on crime statistics in which he noted a sharp increase in cell phone robberies, specifically targeted at the ‘sidekick’ phones. Overall the inspector noted a sharp decrease in crime overall which he attributed to the strong presence of all the additional foot post officers. Mr. Vega also announced that the 71st precinct will be receiving an unknown number of new recruits starting July 1st.

Mr. Vega also introduced a new Executive Officer, who serves as a second in command in the precinct, to the 71st, Captain Frias who will be joining Captain DiPaolo who is the current XO.

Concluding the meeting was the elections for the new board of the Precinct Community Council which meeting attendees voted for the new corresponding secretary, a race between Rafi Lefkowitz and Chris Dawson. The rest of the board was reelected automatically, since their positions were unopposed.

The last statement, that the rest of the board was re-elected, is not totally correct. Chana Jacobson, a former Corresponding Secretary who obtained that position with the bracha of the Rebbe (an almost instantaneous call from the Rebbe’s office), replaced Batia Brandell as Vice President as the latter decided not to run.
