Military Menorah Lit in the Officers’ Mess
A Menorah was lit on the last day of Chanukah in the officers’ mess at Sydney’s Victoria Barracks.
J-Wire understands this is the first time the candles have been lit in the historic compound in Paddington built by convicts in the 1840s.
Captain Yossi Segelman told the story of Chanukah to the mostly military gathering, many of whom were tasting latkes for the first time.
But the highlight of the ceremony was the presentention by Captain Segelman to Major-General Craig Williams of yarmulke…crafted in military camouflage.
Major-General Williams said the the army should be aware of the multicultural diversity within its ranks.
Following a talk by the Yeshiva’s Rabbi Pinchas Feldman, Captain Segelman lit the Menorah on the last day of Chanukah as officers from the Australian Defence Force and a visiting U.S. colleague watched on.
As for the latkes? Captain Rabbi Yossi Segelman told J-Wire: “They loved them….right down to the last one.”
