Rostov Feels the Warmth of Chanukah

ROSTOV [CHI] — Chanukah in Rostov was celebrated like never before, with programs for all ages, the highlight of which was a Chanukah concert and person of the year award attended by over a thousand people.

First to celebrate were members of the Jewish Women’s Club who gathered on the first night of Chanukah in Shul for an evening of “Light and Warmth” where everyone shared personal miracles and inspiration from their lives.

The students of the Or Avner Jewish Day School gathered in the school auditorium for a fun filled Chanukah program with contests, games and a Jewish trivia. Donuts and chocolate gelt were enjoyed by everyone.

The Kindergarden held it’s own Chanukah program, inviting parents and friends to join in the Chanukah fun. The kids performed a dance they prepared especially for this event, they also sang Chanukah songs and told over the story of Chanukah.

Eighty young professionals and university students gathered on the 8th night of Chanukah for an educational and fun evening with live music, contests and a lively Chanukah video. The atmosphere was very joyous as everyone joined in and lit their own menorah.

Chanukah culminated with a grand concert at one of the largest concert halls in town. At the start of the evening Rabbi Chaim Danzinger spoke about the significance of Chanukah and went on to light the large menorah. The program continued with awarding seven outstanding individuals who have contributed to various aspects of Jewish life in Rostov.

Among the honorees was Mr. Yuri Dombrovsky, a local businessman who has undertaken the mission of commemorating the 28,000 victims killed by the Nazi’s at Zmievskaya Balka in Rostov.

In between the awards, various artists and Jewish groups entertained the crowd with music and dance.

The highlight was a performance by world renown Jewish comedian and singer Efim Shifrin, who entertained the crowed with jewish humor and Yiddish songs.

As one person was leaving he said emotionally “I don’t recall hearing yiddish like this since my mother passed away some 30 years ago”.
