First Chanukah Event in the World
Melbourne, Australia [CHI] — Wednesday, 24 Kislev 5771. The first Chanukah event in the world took place this afternoon at the law chambers of prominent Jewish barristers Robert Richter QC, and Remy van de Wiel QC, in the Melbourne Central Business District.
Before a group of around fifty lawyers and other professionals, Richter, who grew up in Israel, introduced the keynote speaker, Supreme Court Judge Michael Sifris.
Sifris delivered an emotional and inspirational address in the persona of the Menorah that for thousands of years, and all over the world, remains a symbol of light and hope to the Jewish people.
Delicious Glick’s doughnuts and latkes were enjoyed by all, and Menorah kits were distributed so that people can begin lighting from the very first night.
Organized by JBD (Jews of the CBD), this is the first in a series of six events for Melbourne professionals – one for each weeknight of Chanukah – spread all across the Melbourne business district.
