BDE: Mrs. Rus (Reesi) Chein, 97, OBM

With great sadness we report the passing of Mrs. Rus (Reesi) Chein OBM, a Holocaust survivor and resident of Crown Heights and later of Melbourne, Australia. She passed away on Wednesday, the 17th of Shvat 5786.

She was 97 years old.

Born in Sighet–Marmarash, in the Transylvania region of Romania, to her parents, Yehoshua and Chaya Rivkah Sax, she was deported in the summer of 1944 to Auschwitz together with her family and the rest of Hungarian Jewry. A survivor of multiple concentration camps and forced labor, including an ammunition factory where she purposefully made faulty ammunition at risk to her life, she was eventually liberated in Bergen-Belsen in 1945.

After immigrating to Israel in 1951 and being introduced to her husband, Tzvi Hersh Chein, through the efforts of his uncle Harav Gershon Chein, they married in 1953.

After the wedding, they moved to France, where Tzvi Hersh lived together with his father, Peretz Chein. They, together with Peretz, eventually settled in Crown Heights.

From the day they moved to France until the day of his passing, almost 20 years later, Peretz lived in the home of Rus and Tzvi Hersh, where they cared for him.
