Golders Green Giant Menorah Shines Brighter Than Ever in its 42nd Year
One of the longest-running public Menorah lightings in the UK marked its 42nd year with an event that was bigger, brighter, and more meaningful than ever before.
This year’s lighting carried special emotional weight. Sydney-based Rabbi Brandon Stern (Hendon US) lit the Menorah in solidarity with the victims of the Bondi massacre, while heartfelt Tehillim were recited by Rabbi Shimshon Gansburg, nephew of Rabbi Eli Schlanger HY”D, creating a powerful moment of remembrance and unity.
Despite significant logistical, regulatory, and security challenges, the Menorah was lit each evening accompanied by highly visible and robust security, allowing the event to remain safe, inclusive, and joyful for all who attended.
On the main evening, moments before the lighting, heavy rain poured down. Remarkably, as the ceremony began, the rain stopped. Nearly 2,000 people gathered that night alone — a striking demonstration of communal strength, resilience, and determination.
The Giant Menorah at Golders Green Station featured public lightings every night of Chanukah, culminating in the much-anticipated Big Kids Night on the final evening. The celebration included international singer Simche Friedman, flown in specially for the event, alongside a thrilling fire show, balloon modelling, candy floss, and festive entertainment for families and children.
Over the course of Chanukah, more than 4,000 doughnuts were distributed, along with souvenir Chanukah beanie hats for children. For many local families, the Menorah lighting has become a cherished annual tradition.
The Big Night was emceed by Rabbi M. Gordon. 12 children from across the UK recited the traditional Torah Passages, symbolising the continuity and future of the Jewish Nation.
A further highlight of the evening was the attendance of Shadow Home Secretary MP Chris Philp, alongside a Barnet Councillor, both of whom addressed the crowd during the Kids Night, offering messages of support, unity, and encouragement to the community.
Each evening, the Menorah was lit by different Guests of Honour, accompanied by traditional Chanukah melodies performed by local chazonim, choirs, and singers, generating a feeling of warmth and pride.
The Menorah is organised by Rabbi Yossi and Chanie Simon, together with Rabbi Schneur and Mrs Keselman, whose dedication has ensured the Menorah’s continued presence.
Beyond Golders Green Station, the organisers have brought Menorah lightings to major public and institutional spaces, including Alexandra Palace, Barnet General Hospital, Great Ormond Street Hospital, Henley’s Corner, the Royal Free Hospital, and Stop the Hate events, reinforcing Chanukah’s universal message of light overcoming darkness.
After 42 years, the Golders Green Giant Menorah continues to demonstrate that public faith, resilience, and joy thrives in shared spaces — shining a light that reaches far beyond the flames themselves.
