Israel’s New Ambassador to Georgia Visits Chabad House in Batumi
The newly appointed Israeli Ambassador to Georgia, Mr. Walid Abu-Haya, paid his first official visit to the Chabad House in the coastal city of Batumi this week. He was warmly received by Rabbi Zevi Mendelzon, who leads the local Chabad activities under the direction of Georgia’s Chief Chabad emissary, Rabbi Meir Kozlovsky.
As part of his introductory meetings upon assuming his new role, Ambassador Abu-Haya’s visit underscored the importance of maintaining strong ties with Jewish communities throughout Georgia, as well as with the many Israeli tourists who frequent Batumi year-round.
During the visit, Rabbi Mendelzon presented the ambassador with an overview of the Chabad House’s dynamic growth in recent years, highlighting community services supported by Rabbi Kozlovsky. These include the historic synagogue, a robust kosher certification program, and a charitable organization assisting both local residents and travelers in need—often during urgent and complex situations.
At the center of the meeting was the detailed logistical preparation underway for the upcoming Chanukah holiday. The ambassador was introduced to the community’s plans for large public menorah lightings across the city and the distribution of thousands of Chanukah kits to local Jews and tourists alike, as part of the global Chanukah campaign initiated by the Rebbe of Lubavitch.
Ambassador Abu-Haya expressed admiration for the scale and inclusiveness of the activities, stating: “It’s inspiring to see this beacon of light in the heart of Batumi that brings people together. Your care for every Jew and Israeli, and the warmth you show to all who enter, are a strategic asset and a badge of honor for Israel. The Chanukah preparations I witnessed here are yet another proof that light always prevails.”
The visit concluded with a mutual commitment to strengthen collaboration between the embassy and the Chabad representatives across Georgia, for the benefit of the local Jewish and Israeli community.
