BDE: Mrs. Tova Preger, 91, OBM

With great sadness we report the passing of Mrs. Tova Preger OBM, a longtime resident of Crown Heights and wife of the legendary chossid and Baal Tzedaka R’ Nochum Preger OBM. She passed away on Motzei Yom Kippur, 5786.

She was 91 years old.

When Tova (nee Abramowitz), whose father’s and mother’s families had lived in Jerusalem and Chevron, respectively, for six generations, was proposed for Reb Nochum Preger, he went into Yechidus with the Rebbe. He told the Rebbe that he wanted to donate money to a mosad. The Rebbe said, “By Mir iz Uforatzto”, for me it is Uforatzto. He instructed Reb Nochum to give $1,000. In the late 1950’s, one thousand dollars was a huge sum of money, yet Reb Nochum gave without hesitation. The Rebbe then encouraged him to get married. After their wedding, the couple returned to New York and raised a chassidishe family.

Reb Nochum was known to be a pillar of chesed who supported many Crown Heights mosdos, including Chanoch Lenaar Yeshiva and Bais Rivkah. Everyone knew that if they needed a favor, they could ask Reb Nochum and without any hesitation or condition, they would receive the money they needed.

Mrs. Preger was known as a generous Baalas Tzedaka. She always had an open home and greeted all with a friendly, warm smile.

She is surived by her children; Moshe Preger (Crown Heights), Mrs. Risa Greenwald (Crown Heights), Meyer Preger (Miami), and Mrs. Miriam Greenwald (Flatbush), as well as grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and a great-great-grandchild.

Her husband R’ Nochum Preger passed away in 1981.

The Levaya will take place today, Friday יא תשרי, passing 770 at 12:00pm, before traveling for Kevurah at Old Montefiore cemetery at 1:00pm.
