NCFJE Celebrates 50 Years of Keeping the Minhag of Kaporos Alive

Kaporos is an ancient custom performed in the days leading up to Yom Kippur, symbolizing repentance and renewal. For decades, the National Committee for the Furtherance of Jewish Education (NCFJE) has worked to ensure that this tradition remains accessible to all members of the Brooklyn Jewish communities, providing affordable opportunities for families and individuals to fulfill the mitzvah with dignity.

“This milestone is about more than numbers,” said Rabbi Shea Hecht, longtime chairman of NCFJE. “For fifty years, our goal has been to make sure every Jew—regardless of means—can take part in this cherished minhag and feel the unity of the community as we prepare for Yom Kippur.”

This year’s initiative not only commemorates a half-century of NCFJE’s service to the Crown Heights, Remsen Village, and East Flatbush communities, but also highlights the organization’s ongoing commitment to preserving Jewish heritage in a way that brings people together.

Any and all donations are warmly encouraged and will go directly to tzedakah for NCFJE’s programs, ensuring that this mitzvah continues to benefit the wider community.
