In a letter released by the committee behind the annual Simchas Beis Hashoeva event on Kingston Ave, and signed by Rabbonim, Mosdos, and community leaders, a firm message was sent: Street vendors will not be tolerated.
“We would like to make you aware of an important policy that will be strictly enforced this year: No street vending of any kind will be permitted,” the letter says. “The NYPD and private security will enforce this policy, and all stands, booths, and tables will be removed.”
The letter comes after multiple years of reforms to the annual event, with more space, better infostructure, and security just a few of the changes made. Though street vending has remained a problem each year.
In a new rule set the past year, vendors were moved a block away from the ongoing festivities, which provided a better outcome for the event, but left many local residents scrambling as loud music, hawkers, and food venders suddenly set up camp outside their homes. Law enforcement and Hatzalah also struggled to move through the adjoining streets, creating a serious danger for to the community. The new rule appears to be attempting to put a stop to the venders all together.
“We ask parents to take this seriously and ensure that children comply,” the letter explains. “This measure is essential to protect everyone attending and to maintain clear access for emergency and law enforcement personnel.”
