New Chabad Center Launched In North Park, San Diego

A once-quiet SoCal neighborhood is booming with young families — and is now home to a new Chabad. North Park — the urban area now described as the “hippest” neighborhood in San Diego — has seen a surge of residents in recent years, drawn by its walkable streets, trendy cafes and eateries, and art and culture scene.

Into this growing community stepped Rabbi Dovber and Batya Uzan, moving just a few months ago to establish the neighborhood’s first Chabad center.

With no previous Jewish infrastructure, Chabad of North Park is becoming a focal point for families and young professionals seeking Jewish connection. Besides the local community, the Uzans are also engaging with the Jewish student population at nearby University of San Diego.

Since their arrival, the Uzans have hosted Shabbat dinners and community events, and are looking forward to upcoming High Holiday services. “Most people we meet have moved here in the last five years,” Rabbi Uzan said. “In the 50s, there was a strong Jewish community here, but it faded away over the years. Now, amid the recent growth, we’re hoping to bring Jewish life back to North Park.”
