The Central Farbrengen on the Eve of the Yahrzeit

Hundreds of Chassidim are expected to travel to Kazakhstan for Chof Av, the yahrzeit of the Rebbe’s father, the renowned gaon and mekubal, Harav Levi Yitzchok Schneerson.

Shluchim and Anash from across the globe will be arriving in Alma Ata. This year Chof Av falls on a Thursday, and since most visitors are planning to return home immediately after the day’s end in order to be back home in time for Shabbos, the organizers have moved the central farbrengen—usually held on Motzei Chof Av—to the eve of the yahrzeit.

The farbrengen will take place in the spacious hall of the Rixos Hotel in central Alma Ata. During the farbrengen, video clips of the Rebbe discussing his father’s yahrzeit will be shown. In keeping with the Rebbe’s handwritten instruction for this day—“Incumbent on me is the great responsibility and merit to suggest and request… that people should learn from his teachings at a farbrengen”—a shiur in the Torah of Harav Levi Yitzchok will be incorporated into the farbrengen. Shluchim and mashpi’im from around the world will participate. 

Moving the central farbrengen to the eve of the yahrzeit allows those flying back on the special charter flight the next morning to take part in this uplifting chassidishe farbrengen.

The organizers of the yahrzeit program note that throughout the days surrounding the yahrzeit, and especially on Chof Av itself, there will be learning programs and shiurim for men, as well as a separate track for women—including designated women’s visiting times at the tziyun.
