American Officials Honor Rabbi Raskin and Chabad of Larnaca for Lifesaving Support to U.S. Citizens in Crisis
Over the past few weeks, as Iran attacked Israel, thousands of American citizens — students, tourists, and travelers — found themselves stranded and urgently seeking a way home. With flights out of Israel halted, many made their way by boat to Cyprus, using the island as a vital transit point to finally return to the United States.
In this time of crisis, Chabad of Larnaca, under the leadership of Rabbi Raskin, stepped up in an extraordinary way. Rabbi Raskin and his team welcomed and assisted thousands of American evacuees, providing them with meals, support, and a warm place to rest — whether for a few hours or overnight — as they awaited flights out of Cyprus.
The appreciation for Rabbi Raskin’s efforts reached the highest levels of American leadership. Among the rescue boats was one led by Florida State Senator Jay Collins, who personally thanked Rabbi Raskin for his exceptional help and presented him with a Medal of Honor from the State of Florida — a powerful symbol of gratitude and recognition.
Additionally, at the United States Embassy’s July 4th celebration in Cyprus, U.S. Ambassador Miss Julie Davis, speaking before hundreds of diplomats and government officials, including the President of Cyprus, publicly acknowledged and thanked Rabbi Raskin for his tremendous contribution during this critical time.
These gestures of thanks underscore the vital and compassionate role Chabad of Larnaca and Rabbi Raskin played in supporting American citizens when they needed it most. Their work exemplifies the highest values of service, community, and unconditional support.
This extraordinary support was made possible thanks to the generosity and dedication of the community. You can be a part of this vital work and help Chabad continue to provide a home away from home for those in need.
