A Historic Tanya Release
The Tanya is often called the “Written Torah” of Chassidus. It was the very first book the Alter Rebbe personally published to present the Baal Shem Tov’s revolutionary teachings in written form. The Tanya has since become a daily presence for every Chossid through daily Chitas instituted by the Frierdiker Rebbe, and countless beginners in Chassidus have taken their first steps into the world of Chassidic thought through this timeless sefer.
Since that first edition was released in 5557 (1796), the Tanya has been reprinted close to 10,000 times and translated into 15 languages. It’s one of the most widely published Jewish texts in history—second only to the Tanach. And over the 228 years since its release, an entire library of commentaries and explanations has grown around it, helping generations of students uncover its deep and lofty messages.
In recent years, especially with the Rebbe’s encouragement, many mashpi’im and teachers—both within Chabad and beyond—have contributed their insights and explanations to help ‘spread the wellsprings’ outward.
But at the heart of it all are the teachings of the Rebbeim themselves. From the Alter Rebbe to the Rebbe, their Maamarim and Sichos contain priceless pearls—hidden treasures buried in every word, letter, and nuance of the Tanya.
Over the years, the Rebbe personally encouraged efforts to compile these explanations into a single edition. He personally reviewed cross-references, worked on indexes, and envisioned a new Tanya that would include all of this material, outlining the model in the 1954 Kehot Tanya. But for various reasons, the full project was never realized—until now.
Today, as Gimmel Tammuz approaches, the dream is becoming a reality. The Tanya Hasholeim project has gone to print, exactly in the format the Rebbe described: the Tanya text in the center of the page, flanked by a brief, annotated commentary on the text, and a curated anthology of biurim from the Rebbeim’s writings.
The “annotated commentary” is an entirely new adaptation based on Rabbi Yosef Weinberg’s Shiurim B’Sefer HaTanya, which were reviewed in full by the Rebbe. This edition also includes entire sections collected from the Rebbe’s handwritten notes on the original Yiddish transcripts—many of which were never printed before.
The “anthology” is a collection of teachings from all the Rebbeim, including notes from the Rebbe’s father, Harav Levi Yitzchak Schneerson. The result is a highly accessible edition that opens up the depth of Tanya to every student, whether beginner or advanced.
The first two volumes include all 53 chapters of Likkutei Amarim, along with the title page, haskamos, and the preface. It also features a historical introduction that tells the story of this monumental project—one the Rebbe first began envisioning almost a century ago, when he began writing his Reshimos on Tanya,
Mashpi’im and Tanya teachers across the world—many of whom were consulted throughout the editorial process—have praised this edition as a game-changer and are recommending it to students and communities alike.
The Tanya Hasholeim Institute, founded 17 years ago, has now completed the first and central portion of this enormous undertaking: a beautiful, two-volume set totaling over 1,100 pages. To celebrate, a special launch offer is available—just $18 per set.
