Bill In The Knesset to Instilling the Legacy of Lubavitcher Rebbe and Chabad Movement Approved in Preliminary Reading
In its sitting on Wednesday, the Knesset Plenum voted to approve in preliminary reading the Bill for Instilling the Legacy of the Lubavitcher Rebbe and the Chabad Movement Dynasty, 2025, sponsored by MK Amichay Eliyahu (Otzma Yehudit) and a group of MKs. In the vote, 23 MKs supported the bill, with no opposing votes or abstentions, and it will be turned over to the Education, Culture and Sports Committee for deliberation.
It is proposed to establish a center for the commemoration the Lubavitcher Rebbe’s work and the legacy of the Chabad movement dynasty. The center will commemorate the legacy of the Lubavitcher Rebbe and his unique contribution to bringing the different segments of Israeli society closer together out of love for the people of Israel, the Torah of Israel and the Land of Israel, in the spirit of the Torah and the Halacha. The center will be a statutory corporation with a 13-member public council, and it will include an institute, an archive and a museum. The establishment of the center and its operation will be funded from the state budget, donations and any revenue the center will generate. The Minister of Heritage will be in charge of the implementation of the law.
The explanatory notes to the bill state, “Rabbi Menachem Mendel Schneerson (the Lubavitcher Rebbe) was the seventh leader of the Chabad Hasidic movement and one of the most influential Jewish leaders in the history of the Jewish people. His work extended far beyond the boundaries of the Hasidic community, and influenced Jews and non-Jews worldwide.”
The explanatory notes mention that the Lubavitcher Rebbe had established a global network of Chabad emissaries, which operates in more than 100 countries. “The Lubavitcher Rebbe was a pioneer in the integration of Judaism and modern science, he promoted universal Jewish education and worked a great deal for the benefit of the people of Israel and the State of Israel,” the explanatory notes read. “The purpose of the bill is to establish a center that will work to commemorate the rebbe’s legacy, mark his unique contribution and inculcate his values for future generations. In addition, the center will work to impart the unique legacy of the Chabad movement throughout the generations; a movement that operates all around the world according to the principle of ‘with all our heart to every Jew.'”
