Rabbi Avtzon Opens the Ohio “State of the State” Address with Prayer
Every year, Mr. Mike Dewine – the Governor of the state of Ohio – gives his “State of the State” address in which he outlines his priorities for the new year. It is attended by all elected officials of the state as well as the justices of the Ohio Supreme Court and watched by thousands across the state. This year, the Governor’s office reached out to Rabbi Gershon Avtzon – Cincinnati, Ohio – to give the opening prayer.
Rabbi Avtzon used this special opportunity – in under 3 minutes – to speak about Purim, Sheva Mitzvos Bnei Noach, Moment of silence and preparing for Moshiach. After the address, many of the elected officials came over to discuss making a moment of silence mandatory in all schools in the state of Ohio. A bill will be introduced this week to start the process. Rabbi Aryeh Kaltman, Shliach to Colombus Ohio, has put much time and energy into this effort.
Rabbi Avtzon was joined by Rabbi Yosef Levy on this special trip. They were treated as the personal guests of the Governor and the Lt Governor Mr. Jim tressel. They met the officials and their families in the private office of the Governor and discussed issues related to the Jewish community.
