Miami-Dade Mayor Danielle Levine Cava held an unusual event at Chabad Chayil, a Shloshim memorial for her mother, Lois May Jaffin Levine OBM.
The unique program opened with a group of Chabad’s daily after-school program for public school children, CHAP, singing a song about the beauty of a Neshama, before the attendees learned a Mishna corresponding to the name Leah Malka bat George & Janet z’l.
Addressing the attendees, the mayor shared some words about her mother, including two poems her mother wrote right before her passing. A chapter of Tehillim was sung, Kaddish, and the traditional verses of condolences were said.
The Mishna portion of Talmud was taught by Rabbi Moishe Kievman of Chabad Chayil in Miami-Dade North. Kel Molay Rachamim was recited by Rabbi Zalman Gansburg of Palmetto Bay.
The Mayor was presented with a BuildChabadChayil.org plaque dedicated to her mother, representing a square foot in the new Chabad Chayil center being constructed in Highland Lakes.
As Miami-Dade County’s Mayor, Danielle Levine Cava oversees a metropolitan government with more than 28,000 employees serving nearly 3 million residents and managing an annual budget of approximately $13 billion.
Originally from Brooklyn, the mayor was first elected in 2014, and re-elected in August 2018, to serve as the Miami-Dade County Commissioner. In 2020 she was elected as mayor for Miami-Dade County and then re-elected in 2024.
In addition to being the county’s first female mayor, she is also its first Jewish mayor.
