Grad Students to Converge on NY for International CYP Encounter
As the annual CYP Encounter Shabbaton approaches, Chabad on Campus International and Chabad Young Professionals are collaborating to offer subsidies for Jewish grad students to attend the largest young professional gathering yet.
This effort is in response to the complex social dynamics and materialistic atmosphere on today’s college and university campuses, which often sideline Jewish engagement. Coupled with the prevalence of conflicting ideologies and rising antisemitism, these factors make it difficult for students to confidently express their Jewishness or connect with their heritage.
While all Jewish students might face these challenges, they are particularly acute for those in graduate programs. Grad students are at a crucial stage in their lives, balancing rigorous academic demands with career ambitions and personal growth, all while grappling with questions of identity and purpose. Rabbi Mendel Rappaport, director of the JGrads program at the University of Chicago, shares, “Graduate students at the University of Chicago have very busy schedules,” he notes, “Between academic studies and career development, their engagement with Judaism can often feel sporadic and superficial.”
These students might also find it difficult to relate to their undergraduate peers, as what inspires and motivates younger students might feel insufficient and shallow for those who are embarking on their adult life engaged in intense studies.
The CYP Encounter Shabbaton offers the perfect space for these grad students to connect with fellow young adults navigating the same stage of life. With its dynamic blend of meaningful workshops, inspirational speakers, and authentic Jewish experiences, the Shabbaton provides graduate students the tools they need to develop a deeper connection with their Jewish roots, build lasting relationships, and find direction as they transition into leadership roles in their professional and personal lives.
“We want to give them the opportunity to experience a full Shabbos, meet young Jews like them from around the world, and see what an authentic Jewish community looks like,” says Mrs. Chaya Slonim of Chabad of Tulane. “And if it’s a catalyst for questions and growth, even better!”
Recognizing the unique needs of this demographic, the CYP Encounter is partnering with Chabad on Campus International to subsidize groups of Jewish graduate students to attend the event, providing them a unique opportunity to connect with their peers in a vibrant Jewish environment.
“As grad students prepare to enter their respective fields it’s important for them to know they aren’t alone,” said Rabbi Mendy Kotlarsky, Executive Director of Merkos 302 and Chairman of Chabad Young Professionals International. “We hope that being immersed in a warm Jewish atmosphere and connecting with their fellow young Jews facing similar challenges will empower them to embrace their new journeys with confidence and pride.”
The graduate students track is just one of many exciting developments contributing to what is anticipated to be the largest CYP Encounter to date. The event is dedicated לעילוי נשמת הרה”ח הרב משה יהודא בן הרה”ח צבי יוסף ע”ה קאטלארסקי, who spearheaded the Chabad Young Professionals International movement.
