The six Sifrei Torah of Chabad of Greater Orlando were spared after a fire sparked at the Chabad Center and heavily damaged the building.
According to the Seminole County Fire Department, the blaze was reported at 11:13am at 708 Lake Howell Road, the Chabad Center, with reports of heavy smoke coming from the roof of the building, according to the Casselberry Police Department.
No injuries were reported and the fire was extinguished quickly, sparing the Shuls six Sifrei Torah.
“The fact that we were able to retrieve all the six Torahs…is absolutely an act of grace from god”, said Rabbi Sholom Dubov, the executive director of the Chabad of Greater Orlando. The fire began after morning services were complete, and no one was in the building at the time.
The Chabad Hebrew School, located next to the Chabad Center and in session at the time, was evacuated as a precaution.
Videos from the scene show the firefighters exiting the still smoking building with Sifrei Torah in hand.
The fire is presently under investigation.
