“Lubavitcher Rebbe Way” Up For Vote In September

In September, Community Board 9 will vote on a proposal to co-name President Street between Brooklyn and New York avenues as “Lubavitcher Rebbe Way.” This honor would recognize the significant impact of the Lubavitcher Rebbe and his wife, Rebbetzin, who lived on this street from the 1950s onward.

The proposal, championed by Council Member Crystal Hudson, has garnered broad support from local elected officials. 

Brooklyn Borough President Antonio Reynoso stated, “He is widely recognized as one of the most important Jewish leaders in modern history. Under his leadership, his teachings brought many closer to Judaism and helped the world learn more about the Jewish faith. I urge you to consider co-naming the street where he resided.”

Senator Zellnor Y. Myrie of the 20th Senate District praised the Rebbe as a visionary whose teachings continue to inspire people globally. “He taught that every person has the potential to make a difference in the world, encouraging love and compassion.”

Assembly Member Brian A. Cunningham of the 43rd District noted the Rebbe’s global influence and his establishment of numerous institutions, many in New York State. “His legacy of peace and love remains a guiding force in the Crown Heights community.”

Sarana Purcell, State Committeewoman/District Leader, and Anthony Beckford, State Committeeman/District Leader-Elect, added that co-naming the street would honor the Rebbe’s deep ties to the community and his teachings of peace and compassion.

The idea to co-name the street was proposed by Rabbi Yaacov Behrman of the Jewish Future Alliance to Council Member Hudson on Gimmel Tammuz, marking the 30th anniversary of the Rebbe’s passing.
