Miracles of Hurricane Andrew to Be Celebrated Today
by Rabbi Raphael Tennenhaus
Today, Tuesday, the 25th of Menachem Av, we have much to celebrate, and to be grateful for.
Much has been written about Hurricane Andrew that happened 33 years ago on the 25th Of Menachem Av, 5752/1992.
The “experts” prepared for doomsday, with thousands of body bags prepared in Miami Beach.
I called Rabbi Avrohom Korf, z”l, and asked him early Sunday morning if he would be calling the Rebbe’s office.
Rabbi Korf asked me to make the call. Much was written then and in the decades that followed about the Rebbe’s stunning answer: The Rebbe instructed not to leave, despite the dire warnings to evacuate.
The media was all over this. Both before the Hurricane struck, and after, the media in many parts of the globe was (ironically) telling the truth.
Before the Hurricane struck, the word was out that a Rabbi in Brooklyn told his followers not to evacuate.
After the Hurricane struck, and the Rebbe’s instructions proved to be 100% accurate, unlike the predictions of the “experts”, the headlines were actually reporting “non fake news”, that the Rabbi in Brooklyn was “prophetic”.
Being that this Hurricane took place six months after the Rebbe’s first stroke, this “miracle story”, uplifted the hearts of Chassidim around the world.
Every year, in Hallandale Beach, Florida, we celebrate this miracle, and give thanks to HaShem that 1- we were spared, and 2- we witnessed a prophecy and a miracle that was, albeit with many nods of the Rebbe’s head, as the Rebbe wasn’t talking, clearly another confirmation that the Rebbe is leading, guiding and directing Klal Yisroel.

Hurricane Andrew made landfall a few hours before my first day of law school at U of Miami.
I had rented an apartment in South Kendall, Fl, ( The Falls Shopping Ctr) which is south of Miami Beach. I evacuated north to Sunrise, FL (Broward County). Kendall was destroyed & unrecognizable during the day!
All visual cues were gone. No streetlights, food stores, etc., This was before cell phones.
