In Its 50th Year, the Daily Siyum Is Streaming Strong

Prior to Rosh Chodesh Av 5735 (1975) the Rebbe spoke about holding a siyum every day of the 9 Days, even though the participants would not be using it as a “loophole” to allow them to eat meat.

The Rebbe quoted the famous vort of the Munkatcher Rebbe, the Minchas Elozor. Playing on the Talmud’s words, “When the month of Av comes we decrease in joy,” the Munkatcher was wont to say that when Av comes in we need to decrease the negative aspects of Av by adding in the joy of Torah!

Taking the Rebbe’s call to heart, the indefatigable Rabbi JJ Hecht began arranging that a daily siyum should be broadcast on air so that Jews all over the Tri-State Area could take advantage.

Rabbi Hecht passed away suddenly in 1990 on the 15th of Av. The following year, the Rebbe called for the siyumim to continue until that day.

Rabbi Hecht’s children, whom the Rebbe instructed to continue his leadership of the NCFJE, also continue the tradition of arranging the daily on-air siyum.

And since 2008, in addition to the radio, it has also been streamed live, hosted by Rabbi Shimon Hecht, on Chabad.org, accessible to virtually any Jew in the world.
