New State Department Letters Unearthed Surrounding Frierdiker Rebbe and Family’s Situation in 1940

In the government archives there are letters addressed to a U.S. State Department official named Robert T. Pell on the subject of visas for “Chabad hierarchy.”

The first letter is dated January 5, 1940 by a Washington, D.C. attorney named Max Rhoade, concerning “the Chabad religious library at Otwock” and the “unsolved problem of evacuating Rabbi Mendel Horenstejn of the Chabad hierarchy and his family.”

This gives us an idea of the behind the scenes situation of the FR escape, his family stuck in Warsaw, and the Rebbe & Rebbetzin in Paris.

More to come….
