Weekly Dvar Torah: 30 Days of Reflection on 30 Years Since Gimmel Tammuz

Thirty years have passed since Gimmel Tammuz, a profoundly significant date for Lubavitch Chassidim marking the passing of our Rebbe. For many, this event was unimaginable, as the Rebbe has been a central figure in their lives, providing guidance, inspiration, and a profound sense of purpose.

In the years leading up to Gimmel Tammuz, the Rebbe consistently emphasized the imminent arrival of Moshiach. This message filled us with hope and anticipation, believing that the era of exile was nearing its end. The Rebbe taught that by preparing spiritually, we could hasten the end of exile and usher in a time of eternal happiness and closeness to G-d.

Born and raised in Crown Heights, the heart of Chabad-Lubavitch, I personally experienced the Rebbe’s presence as integral to my upbringing. His weekly Farbrengens were not just gatherings; they were transformative experiences where he would impart Torah teachings for hours, instilling in us a deep connection to our faith and a strong sense of communal responsibility. The Rebbe’s love for every Jew was palpable, as evidenced by his tireless efforts, spending hours praying at the Ohel and distributing dollars and blessings every Sunday.

However, after Gimmel Tammuz, the physical presence of the Rebbe is no longer with us. Many speculated that without his charismatic leadership, Lubavitch would diminish and fade into history. Yet, thirty years later, the reality is vastly different. The movement has grown exponentially, from 1500 Shluchim in 1994 to over 6000 worldwide today. Schools, Shuls and Yeshivas continue to spring up across the globe, spreading Torah and Chassidic teachings.

Central to the Rebbe’s leadership was his profound connection to the Ohel, the resting place of his predecessor, where he sought guidance and drew strength. The Rebbe instructed Chassidim to do the same in order to strengthen their connection to the Rebbe. In his teachings the Rebbe also emphasized that through studying his Torah and following his directives, his spiritual presence will continue to guide and inspire.

As we approach this thirtieth anniversary, it’s a time for reflection and renewal. The Rebbe’s teachings on continuous growth and spiritual vitality are more relevant than ever. The Rebbe lives on through the dedication of his Chassidim, who strive to fulfill his mission of making the world a dwelling place for G-d.

Approaching the thirtieth anniversary, it is a time for reflection on the Rebbe’s teachings. Here are ten of the messages he imparted that continue to guide Chassidim:

  1. Divine Essence in Teachings: The Rebbe taught that studying his teachings connects us directly with him, as he embedded his essence within them.
  2. Entering Service at Thirty: just as the Levites enter Temple service at age thirty, the Rebbe emphasized that this age marks a new entry and a deeper commitment to Hashem’s service.
  3. Renewing Torah Daily: Just as we bless the Torah daily, the Rebbe urged us to heed his teachings with a renewed energy, and hasten the redemption, likening our time to the eve of Shabbat.
  4. Fulfilling the Rebbe’s Mission: Rather than mourning his absence, the Rebbe encouraged us to focus on fulfilling his mission to bring Moshiach.
  5. Unity Through Torah: The Rebbe stressed that unity with him is achieved through studying his teachings, even if one cannot physically visit the Ohel.
  6. Connection Through Torah Study: By studying the Rebbe’s Torah, we connect with him as he continues to lead, influence and guide us.
  7. Thirty Years of Reflection: The thirtieth anniversary serves as a milestone to reflect on our growth and renew our commitment to the Rebbe’s teachings.
  8. Springboard for Renewal: Instead of despairing over past shortcomings, the Rebbe urged us to use them as a catalyst for spiritual renewal.
  9. Growth Beyond Physical Presence: The Rebbe’s influence has only grown since Gimmel Tammuz, enriching the lives of those who were born after and follow his teachings.
  10. Eternal Leadership: According to Chabad teachings, a Tzaddik’s influence extends beyond physical life, blessing all who follow his teachings.

Thirty years after Gimmel Tammuz, despite the physical absence of the Rebbe, his impact remains undeniably strong. His teachings continue to resonate, guiding new generations in their spiritual journey and commitment to spreading goodness and kindness. The growth of Lubavitch since Gimmel Tammuz serves as a testament to the enduring power of the Rebbe’s vision and the unwavering devotion of his followers.

Through study, action, and unwavering commitment to his mission, Chassidim ensure that his vision for a redeemed world remains vibrant and compelling.

As we strive towards the ultimate redemption and the coming of Moshiach, we draw strength from the Rebbe’s teachings, knowing that his presence and guidance are eternal, guiding us towards a future filled with Divine light and joy.

Use these thirty days of preparation, to maximize the vitality that the Rebbe is bestowing upon us at this milestone age of thirty, as the Mishna says; at the age of thirty, full strength is reached.

Have an energized strong Shabbos,
Gut Shabbos
