Photographer Reconnects with Shliach

Marc Asnin, an award winning photographer, who took the photos of the Rebbe and Chabad for two articles in the New York Times Magazine, in time for the publishing of his new book The Oracle: Portraits of Rebbe Mendel Schneerson, reunited with the shliach who assisted him in his assignment.

The coffee table book, to be published in honor of thirty years since Gimmel Tammuz, is described by the publisher, “For his 90th birthday in 1992, Rebbe Mendel Schneerson was featured on the cover of the New York Times Magazine. Through photographs and personal reflections, The Oracle examines that moment, the man, and the Chabad movement that he built into an international juggernaut.”

In the New York Times Magazine article there was a photo of Rabbi Levi Baumgarten, the iconic Mitzvah Tank shliach in Manhattan. But Rabbi Baumgarten also encouraged Mr. Asnin jump into the crowd and take the photo of the Rebbe that was featured in the opening pages of the 1992 article.

Rabbi Baumgarten found his photos in the book, and reminisced about those times with the photographer. He also assisted Mr. Asnin in the putting on of Tefillin.
