Pomona Awoke in the Morning to Their Shul in Flames

Two years ago, Pomona danced together in celebration of a new Sefer Torah. The event was a source of great joy and inspiration for the entire community.

After a lively and musical parade escort, the Hachnosas Sefer Torah concluded at Chassidim 110, a beloved shul for hundreds of families throughout the area. During the week, the shul served as a Beis Medrash, with daily shiurim and an atmosphere of learning for all who entered its doors. On Shabbos, the building transformed into an epicenter, where men, women, and children gathered weekly to daven, listen to a drasha, and socialize with friends at the delicious kiddish.

It’s known that a shul isn’t just a structure, but the gateway to physical and spiritual brachos for the community. Chassidim 110 truly displayed its commitment to the families of Pomona, with an open-door policy and exciting plans for its growth. In fact, it was in the midst of enhancing and upgrading the building that tragedy struck.

Pomona awoke in the morning to their shul in flames. The blazing fires burnt the entire building to the ground, together with thousands of siddurim, chumashim, and seforim used lovingly throughout the years. The community anxiously waited until the smoke subsided to check the status of the Torah Scrolls, which were believed to be protected in a safe. Unfortunately, even the Sifrei Torah couldn’t withstand the flames.

Just a short time following the joyous celebration of the Sefer Torah two years prior, the community planned a levaya for 3 Sifrei Torah, each burnt beyond repair.

A devastation for Monsey. A tragedy for the entire Klal Yisroel.

As Yidden, our ancestors have taught us to rise from the ashes. An abundance of cherished memories will be buried along with the backbone and center of Yiddishkeit in our community. But it’s time to create new memories.
