Rabbi Mendel Tenenbaum A”H, The Only Member of his Family to Survive the Holocaust
Rabbi Chesky Tenenbaum, the Director at Jewish Uniformed Service Association of Maryland, posted the following story to Facebook in honor of International Holocaust Remembrance Day.
My dear grandfather Rabbi Mendel Tenenbaum A”H, was the only member of his family to survive the holocaust. Pictured at my Bar Mitzvah with my grandfather.
He was a recipient of Mr. Chiune Sugihara’s transit visa to Japan in 1940. See photo of the actual transit visa list with my grandfather’s name circled.
A few years ago the Jewish Museum of Maryland had a display called, Beyond Duty: Diplomats Recognized as Righteous Among the Nations. It featured Mr. Chiune Fam. Sugihara the Japanese Consul to Lithuania and I was able to learn more on the life of Mr. Sugihara, who saved the lives of 6000 people. Many of the recipients of his visa referred to Mr. Sugihara as the angel of G-D.
On October 10, 1984, Yad Vashem awarded Mr. Sugihara the title of Righteous Among the Nations. May their memories be a blessing.
