JEM: The Rebbe on Israel and the Nations, Getting Sign-Off from the Cossacks

The Rebbe rarely spent his time discussing the immorality of the nations, but on the few occasions he did, it was quite a feisty presentation. This talk took place in the winter of 1969, as the UN was rocked by stormy debates about whether Israel had the right to retaliate against terrorists infiltrating from Jordan.

The Rebbe, who held that Israel must never outsource its decision making to other nations, including its greatest allies, did his best to explain to Israel’s leaders just how futile such an effort would be. Through the crocodile tears of so many other nations, the Jews will always be expected to “turn the other cheek.” Meanwhile, if we’re to listen to Torah’s straightforward instructions, we’d be in a very different place.
