As Jews around the globe turned on their phones Motzei Shabbos they were assaulted with terrifying news. A massive 6.8-magnitude earthquake had rocked Marrakesh, Morocco, leaving thousands dead and even more homeless.

For many Chabad Anash, the first thought was for the Shluchim of Morocco, were they safe?

“We are so grateful to everyone reaching out to see how we are and if we need help,” Rabbi Levi Banon, of Chabad of Casablanca, Morocco wrote in a message. “I am personally on the ground in Marrakech and the sorrounding areas to see what needs to be done and to help out.”

In contact with the local communities, Banon and the other Shluchim immediately recognized the need for help and sprung into action.

“We have been in contact with the local communities who are in dire need of immediate relief,” Banon said. Handing out food, water, and other necessities, the Shluchim began providing what they could to the local population.

In partnership, and with the blessing of, Mr. Serge Berdugo Président of the Jewish communities of Morocco, Chabad of Morocco has launched an earthquake relief fund dedicated to providing vital humanitarian aid and supporting the ongoing recovery efforts.

“We deeply mourn the tragic loss of life caused by this disaster and extend our heartfelt condolences to those who have lost their loved ones or been injured,” Rabbi Banon wrote. Our team is actively on the ground, and we are mobilizing our dedicated volunteers to provide critical support to the affected communities. Our commitment to these efforts is unwavering, guided by our core values of compassion and assistance to those in need.”
