Resilience: Chabad of the Beaches Unites Community to Heal from Torah Vandalism

The Chabad of the Beaches community in Long Beach, New York, marked a profound moment of unity and resilience on August 20, 2023. Gathered together under the spiritual direction of Rabbi Eli and Beila Goodman, along with guidance from Rabbi Shlomie and Gitel Naparstek who recently joined the community at Chabad of the Beaches, the community came together to dedicate a new Torah scroll, shining a beacon of hope after the heart-wrenching theft and vandalism of two sacred Torah scrolls nearly two years ago.

In a moving ceremony on the 3rd of Elul, August 20, members of the Chabad of the Beaches community joined hands with government officials, community leaders, and hundreds of participants to honor the memory of the stolen Torah scrolls. This momentous event not only represented the recovery of what was lost but also symbolized the continuation of the profound values embodied in these sacred scrolls.

Rabbi Eli Goodman, reflecting on the celebration, remarked, “Today’s event marks a pivotal moment in the revitalization of the community’s spirit as we move forward with renewed purpose and unwavering resolve towards the future.”

The event was a resounding success, with participants enjoying every moment. Choni Milecki’s dynamic presence, combined with the Korn Torah Truck, created an electric atmosphere. Soho Caterers catered the 250+ participant celebratory dinner.

The event was a testament to meticulous planning and coordination, incorporating live music and dancing, both in the synagogue and outside in the streets, props, kid’s’ engagement and a sence of inspiration and joy.

Baila Goodman, community Rebbetzin, was overwhelmed by the large turnout and the exuberant Torah Street Parade, stating, “It reaffirms the strength of unity and the indomitable spirit of the Chabad of the Beaches community, showing that even in the face of darkness, their light shines brighter than ever.”
The highlight of the event was the parade, which wound its way through the streets of Long Beach, including the iconic boardwalk. The sight of the Torah scroll on the boardwalk inspired cyclists, walkers, and even residents on their balconies overlooking the procession, epitomizing the unity that transcends all walks of life.

This journey of healing and restoration was made possible by the boundless generosity and unwavering support of Elaine and Norm Brodsky, who recognized the profound significance of this moment. Their initiative to underwrite a new Torah scroll and find the right expert sofer under the guidance of Rabbi Yitzchok Raskin of Machon Stam has not only mended a scar but has also strengthened the bonds of the Chabad of the Beaches community.

In the face of adversity, Chabad of the Beaches stands as a testament to the enduring strength of faith, unity, and resilience. The community continues to move forward, guided by the eternal wisdom and spiritual guidance of the Torah, a symbol that remains unwavering amidst challenges.

Chabad of the Beaches, a Jewish organization that caters to the physical and spiritual welfare of the local community, runs the Elaine and Norm Brodsky Center for Jewish Life located at 570 W Walnut St in the center of Long Beach, NY, servicing Atlantic Beach, Long Beach, Lido Beach and Point Lookout.
